Surrounded by fires, smoke fills Carson skies

Numerous wildland fires surrounding Carson City are pumping smoke into the region. Strenuous outside activities should be avoided, especially by individuals with chronic respiratory conditions.

The closest active fire is the 13,000-acre Adrian fire burning in the Pine Nut Mountains 10 miles south of Silver Springs and 12 miles northwest of Wabuska.

The lightning-caused fire is burning in rough, inaccessible terrain and is 10 percent contained.

To the south, the Inyo Complex of fires has burned more than 34,000 acres between Big Pine and Independence in the southern Sierra Nevada. It's only 8 percent contained as of midday Sunday.

The Antelope Complex near Antelope Lake in California, northwest of Reno has burned 14,700 acres in the Plumas National Forest in the Susanville, Calif., region. It's 10 percent contained.

North of Reno is the Hungry Valley fire, now contained after burning 504 acres, and the Rancho Haven and Needles fires, which have burned 650 acres.

Other Northern Nevada fires include the Thomas fire, which has burned 24,400 acres 2 miles southwest of Winnemucca; the West Basin fire southwest of Jackpot is 30,000 acres and 15 percent contained; the Tungsten fire 3 miles north of Imlay has burned 49,000 acres and is 30 percent contained; the Lampson fire 24 miles southeast of Ely has burned 1,200 acres and is 5 percent contained; the Harrison fire 20 miles southeast of Elko has burned more than 8,000 acres and is 5 percent contained; the Eccles fire 26 miles northeast of Wells has burned 4,000; the MM288 fire 10 miles west of Elko is 900 acres at 10 percent containment.
