A Sayers sighting at Edgewood

He wasn't on the celebrity roster and there wasn't a press conference announcing his presence in town.

Hall of Fame running back Gale Sayers never craved attention when he played for the Chicago Bears (1965-71) and he certainly didn't want it while he played a round of golf Wednesday at Edgewood.

Sayers, 64, took time to sign autographs afterward, then was on the move, almost as if he was once again wearing No. 40, darting through fans and media members before disappearing onto a shuttle bus.

PICKING LONGWELL

Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers predicted a new winner for this year's ACC Celebrity Golf tournament. Though most pick Rhoden, Quinn, Wagner and the usual veterans, Rodgers' pick is kicker Ryan Longwell.

"He has the best swing," said Rodgers, of fellow Cal alum Longwell. "He's playing some great golf."

When asked about Cal's Rose Bowl chances, Rodgers, who led the Bears to a 10-1 record in the 2004 season, a year that many thought the Bears were jilted out of a Rose Bowl bid, just shook his head.

"It's the same question every year," Rodgers said. "We've got to beat Tennessee and USC."

Cal has come close, but hasn't played in the Rose Bowl since 1959.

ERICKSON ADDED

Former Baltimore Orioles/Minnesota Twins' pitcher Scott Erickson was added to the tournament on Wednesday.

After losing three players on Tuesday, the ACC lost two more a day later: ESPN SportsCenter/radio personality Dan Patrick and Kansas City Chiefs' linebacker Donnie Edwards.
