Player split on Aaron-Bonds issue

Celebrities participating in the Harrah's Lake Tahoe Celebrity-Amateur and practice rounds on Wednesday, were all happy to be playing golf among old friends, in front of great fans and at beautiful Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

Several baseball players were split on the subject of home-run leader Hank Aaron's attendance when Barry Bonds breaks the prestigious record, which possibly will occur within the next few weeks.

"Henry is busy these days," said Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter. "Someone of his stature shouldn't have to chase Bonds around the country."

"What if Bonds goes into a batting slump?" Carter added. "Mr. Aaron would have to fly all over the place."

Bret Saberhagen, the 1985 World Series MVP, offered a different viewpoint.

"It's such a great accomplishment, that he should try be there," Saberhagen said. "It's great for baseball."

The players were in agreement regarding Aaron's presumed negativity toward Bonds due to his allegations on using performance-enhancing drugs.

"He (Aaron), should not be bitter, but acknowledge it," Carter added. "If it's meant to be, it will happen. Nothing has been proven against Bonds."

"Records are made to be broken," Saberhagen said. "Baseball is doing their best about steroids."

Despite the controversy, players seem to agree that the home run record, the most revered in sports, is an incredible accomplishment.
