Radical fashion design workshop series starts on Saturday

The Capital City Arts Initiative's new project "Radical Fashion Design Studio," will be featured at "CCAI Downtown," the arts organization's new temporary gallery space at the northeast corner of Curry and Third streets. The project will feature a series of three workshops 1-5 p.m. Saturday, July 28 and Aug. 4.

The studio and workshops are part of Radical Fashion, a suite of four projects focusing on the emerging intersection of art and fashion.

The hands-on workshops, suitable for all levels, will introduce participants to the possibilities of one-off, designed and altered clothing. There is no fee and materials will be provided. Pre-registration is encouraged but not required. Workshop leaders are CCAI's Christina Bruce, and Radical Fashion artists Claire Ponn and Kodi Fujii.

Basket weaver to show art

The Nevada State Museum celebrates Paiute cultural heritage as master basket weaver Elaine Smokey demonstrates her art from 1-4 p.m. Saturday. Smokey will bring raw materials to demonstrate both willow work and horsehair basketry techniques.

A member of the Walker River Paiute Tribe in Schurz, she is highly skilled in the art of making cradleboards, "boat" baskets for newborns, round baskets, cone baskets, winnowing trays and rattles. Her demonstration complements the exhibit: "Interwoven 2007: Visions of the Great Basin Basketmakers," currently on display. The program is co-sponsored by the Nevada Arts Council's Folklife Program. Birding trip Saturday at Washoe Lake

Lahontan Audubon Society is sponsoring a free morning birding trip 7 a.m. Saturday at the ponds and marshes of the Washoe Lake Mitigation Wetland. Many duck, shore bird and wading species may be seen from paths and an elevated observation deck. Leader Steve Ting regularly birds the Washoe Lake area and photographs the many species he encounters. Time permitting, the group will also ascend Deadman's Creek Trail to look for Bullock's Oriole and more.

Meet at 7 a.m. sharp at the Washoe Lake Wetland parking area. From Highway 395, take East Lake Boulevard (Exit No. 42) at the south end of Washoe Lake. Head east about two miles to the parking area. Bring water, hat, sunscreen, binoculars and spotting scope if you have one.

Artist's work to show at Mustang Museum

World-renowned artist Janice Darr Cua will pay tribute to Reno's Artown and celebrate the opening of the famous Mustang Ranch Museum with a special showing of her paintings at the Museum from 4-9 p.m. Saturday

The museum is located next to the Mustang Ranch and Wild Horse brothels eight miles east of Sparks off Interstate 80 at the Patrick interchange.

Cua's art ranges from the spirit of Arabian horses, the romance of the Renaissance and the paintings she will have on display classic sensuality and femininity.

Tours of the museum and brothel are from 3-9 p.m. Saturday.
