Meeting with the enemy

Despite living in a heavily Republican county - Douglas - and working for another predominantly Republican county - Lyon - Bob Hadfield admitted he has met with (gasp!) Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Hadfield, the interim county manager, recently took at trip to Richmond, Va., to attend a National Association of Counties annual meeting.

"All of the presidential candidates were invited to address NACO," he told the Lyon County Commission at its last meeting. "Sen. Hillary Clinton was the only one who came."

He said the New York Democrat expressed support for PILT, or Payments In Lieu of Taxes, which are given to states with large tracts of land under federal control.

All in all, he said, "it was a good meeting."

Two Reno men had to be very hungry, or maybe they were planning on holding a very big fish fry.

Earlier this month, Yao Li and Chi King pleaded guilty to having 155 more fish than Nevada law allows fishermen to catch.

Fifteen fish per person is the limit.

They were on a fishing trip July 18 at Lake Lahontan when game wardens noticed an awful lot of fish in their possession, including catfish, crappie, wipers and white bass.

Ed Lyngar, Nevada Division of Wildlife public information officer, said most people who go over the limit do so by one or two fish.

Forty-four Lyon County employees, including two county commissioners, were recognized for years of service, from five to 20 years.

Plaques, mugs and other gifts were given out at the commission's meeting on July 19.

Honored for five years' service were Gary Barwig, Donna MacGill, Lanona Higly, Kathy Smith, Sara Brower, Ann Breuer, Michael Nelson, Melba Castles, Penny Valiska, Thomas Karr, Cynthia Munn, Pauline Ruble, Paul Van Diver, Michele Borge, Christopher Wren and Ted Zylstra.

Joining Commissioners Bob Milz and LeRoy Goodman, being honored for 10 years' service, were Alfonso Lopez, Delbert Matheus, Bryan Veil, Shawn Clanton, Maria Alexander, Susan Groteguth, Julie Jones, James Hardie, Maureen Williss, Dora Page, Bryan Parsons, Eric Smith, Leslie Hines, Jack Mosby and Jolene Canterbury.

For sweating it out with the county for 15 years, Amy Van Dalinda, Martha Cervantes, Dana Judd, Roger Sayre, Howard Reid, Keith Valentine, Sandra Ogolin and Steven Beal were recognized.

And for putting in 20 years, honored were Michael Fletcher, Tanya Sceirine and Vickey Sue Borsini.
