Indian Creek Reservoir fishing and a black bear

BISHOP, CALIF. AREA:

Sabrina Lake: Patti Apted of the Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425): The fishing this week was kind of off and on Ð maybe due to the full moon, warm temps (for the lake that is), and a bit of a pressure change (pretty good excuses, huh). Fishing the inlets with eggs or worms was what was working this week. Trolling worms and red and gold Thomas Buoyant or red Roostertail lures were the hot ticket. And on shore, it was worms and Power Bait. Lots of fish were seen being cleaned. For the bubble and fly fishermen, olive Woolly Buggers or Matuka flies were doing well. The lead core anglers were seen going out about 3 colors.

BLUE LAKES AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930): The mosquitoes are still bothersome, bring your repellent. Upper Blue was better than Lower. Some limits.

BRIDGEPORT CALIF. AREA: Jim Reid of Ken's Sporting Goods Store (760-932-7707): Fishing is excellent from boats, nothing from shore. Mostly, still fishing with nightcrawlers or flies such as Damsels or Blood Midges,

BURNSIDE LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported: Two fly fishermen caught and released a number of small brookies.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported: Good fishing with some limits, but nothing big.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: Doug Busey of Douglas County reported a Calif. angler caught a 9-pound (28 inches) brown on the 24th with flashers and a nightcrawler

CARSON RIVERS, CALIF:

East Carson River: Todd Sodaro and Chad Machado of the Carson River Resort (877-694-2229): We had a couple of big plants (Thursday and Friday) and the fishing has been great. A father and son (Raymond and C.J. Tinnin) caught a 6.4 pounder on Salmon eggs, Miguel Galindo of Carson City caught a 4.5 pounder on Power Bait on Sunday and Robert Oldham of Sacramento caught a 2-pounder on Salmon eggs.

West Carson River: Dave Kirby: A big plant of nice fish on Friday. A 9-pound rainbow on a Panther/Martin lure by Kevin Rodgers of Woodfords on Friday. A 4-pound rainbow on Power Bait by Buddy Potter of Tacoma, Wash. on Sunday.

CONVICT LAKE, CALIF: Launa Strickland at the Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260): Fishing has slowed down a bit. The biggest rainbows were: 5.0 pounds on Rainbow Gulp from the south shore, 4-pounds, 11-ounces on Rainbow Power Bait at the inlet and 3-pounds, 9-ounces on yellow Power Bait at the inlet.

CROWLEY LAKE AREA, CALIF: Steve Osterman of Performance Anglers of Mammoth Lakes (760) 924-2181:

Crowley Lake: The north arm of the lake is fishing well and the algae is not as thick as in other areas. Fish in 3-4 feet of water with a Midge Pupa like Stevie's Wonder gray/black under a large dry fly such as a stimulator or Madam X.

Hot Creek: Water flow is 13 CFS. Time for 6X leaders and small flies. Use a dry/dropper combination. Try a yellow Sally on top with a small (size 18-22) Pheasant Tail Nymph or WD-40 as the dropper. Good caddis grab in the afternoon.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot, Calif. (530-993-4683): Fishing has been improving recently. Fish early in the morning or right before sunset for best results.

GREEN CREEK, CALIF. (West of Bridgeport): Jim Reid reported: Stocked pretty good last week. Mosquitoes are not as bad as last year.

HINKSON SLOUGH, NEV: Elmer Bull reported: My son and some friends fished there late Monday afternoon. They caught and released some bass and bluegill. One of the bullgills was an 11-incher which was in the trophy class.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR, CALIF: Dave Kirby: Has an algae bloom and the water continues to warm up. With the forecast for hot weather for this week, it will get worse.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR, CALIF: Doug Busey of Douglas County: A week ago, I was hassled for three straight nights by a black bear while I was camped at the campground. I ended up with a destroyed cooler, a broken window, a broken rear view mirror and scratch marks on the side of my truck. However, the fishing was very good, with a olive Woolly Bugger fly from my float tube.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF: Steven Osterman: Current flow in Rush Creek is 22 CFS. Try Pheasant Tail Nymphs, flash back Hares Ears and black ants. The section of stream below U.S. 395 to Mono Lake providing some good dry fly opportunities with Royal Wullf's Sierra Brite Dot's and Elk Hair Caddis. Silver Lake have been the best bet for float tubers. Black Mohair Leeches, olive Matukas and Zonkers. Fish along the ledge parallel to the main road on the west side.

MAMMOTH LAKES, CALIF: Steven Osterman: Middle Twin is good with Callibaetis Nymphs, Stevie's Wonder black/silver, Carrie Special's and Doc's Twin Lakes Special. Also try Lake Mary on the east end near the stumps.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF: Steven Osterman:

Upper: Water flow about 107 CFS. Not much different than last week. Above the Benton Crossing Bridge, try San Juan Worms, Glo-Bugs, Pheasant Tails and sparkle Caddis Pupa and cover lots of water. Some surface action with yellow Sallys and yellow Stimulators. The section below the bridge is being stocked weekly with 2,500 pounds of fish. Caddis in the afternoon.

Lower: Water flow is currently 448 CFS. Fishing is pretty tough now due to the high flows.

SILVER LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported: Good fishing with some limits, but nothing big.

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552): We have been trolling 50-240 feet deep. We locate the fish on the fish finder and then troll in a "Figure Eight" pattern, bouncing the bottom. I've been fishing at Cal-Neva, Dollar Point and Sugar Pine Points. We limited out four different days, last week. Largest was 10 pounds.

LAKE TAHOE - South Shore: Gene St. Denis: I've been fishing 50-200 feet deep at Ski Run Shelf, Camp Richardson and the Tahoe Keys. Trolling with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and minnows. Bouncing off the bottom in a serpentine pattern. Macks are 2-7 pounds.

LAKE TAHOE - East Shore: Gene St. Denis: Trolling for Mackinaw 60-150 feet deep with flashers and minnows.

TOPAZ LAKE: Chuck and Linda Fields at the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550): I'm busy paying bills right now (Monday morning). Not much fishing going on, the fish have gone deep. It's pretty darn quiet out here.

TRUCKEE RIVER, NEV: Andy at The Gilly Sporting Goods Store: The Truckee is still on fire. Try Possie Bugger, yellow Sallys or Stone Flies in the early evenings. Nothing super big, just the normal Truckee River size.

TWIN LAKES, CALIF:

Upper Twin Lake: Annett's Mono Village (760-932-7071): A 6-pound, 1-ounce rainbow on a trolled black Rapala lure, Ed Imsland of Jackson caught a 5-pound, 2-ounce and a 4-pound, 15-ounce on a red/gold Thomas Buoyant lure, and Vince Hanson of Apple Valley caught a 5-pound 12-ounce and A 4-pound, 8 ounce on a CD-9 Rapala lure.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF: Carolyn Webb of the Virginia Lakes Resort: Salmon Peach Power Bait has been the bait for the week, followed by Power Worms in pink. Hot lures have been red/gold Thomas Buoyant, red fire-stripe Hot Shots, small gold Kastmaster, and Spin-A-Lures in gold with red dots. Tim Alpers stocked his world famous Rainbows and 200 browns on the 29th, and the tubers were in "Hawg" heaven. Fly line addicts have been using Midges, Emergers and black Doc's Twin Lakes Special (size 12), and some great action on Parachute Adams if you're into dries.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF: Jim Reid:

East Walker: Fishing has been excellent with dry flies in the mornings, Nymphs during the day, and Caddis in the late afternoon.

West Walker: Pretty good for small, pan size trout. Using little spinners or dry flies.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:

East Walker: Steve Osterman reported: The flow is currently 101 CFS. Prince Nymphs, WD-40's, flashback Pheasant Tails, sparkle Caddis Pupa, Stimulators and Caddis. The drop in water flow has made for tougher fishing.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR, NEV: Dennis Dunn, Mark, Rocket and Scott at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472: Fishing is just excellent, both from shore or in boats. Darn few fishermen but lots of fish, big fish. It's the best fishing, I've seen in the last 10 years. Everything is biting. The perch are running 11 inches, the trout are 16-22 inches and lots of Channel Catfish are being caught.
