Each week Carson High School and the Rotary Club of Carson City recognize students for their contributions, excellence and good behavior.

The following students have been selected this year: Andrew Stephenson, Ann Sinnott, Justine Von Rumpf, Kendra Simms, Anna Macquarie, Kyle Churchley, Mathew Neben, Jamie Greene, Kimberly Stefonowicz, Samantha Millard, Loretta Williams, Timothy Chatwood, Stephen Remer, Gregory Saunders, Joseph Leatham, and James "Zack" Weismann. The students are honored at the weekly Rotary Club luncheon.

Seniors are seeing light at the end of the tunnel and graduation is just around the corner, but before they can dawn the cap and gown, they must get over one final obstacle: the Senior Project.

Many students have chosen to give back to the community in some form of volunteer service. For example, Tiffani Barber has chosen to put on a benefit concert of youth acts to support finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis.

The culminating portion of the project is a presentation by the senior presented to a panel of community members. With more than 450 seniors graduating, the task of judging the presentations is large and requires many volunteers.

The choir and drama departments have been extremely busy this month. We have several students who are fundraising for a trip to Hawaii April 10- 15. They will be competing in a "Heritage Festival" with judges and awards against 19 other high schools from across the country.

The CHS concert choir, Chamber Singers and Capitol Stars are all competing. If you can financially donate to the kids, please contact Susan Sonnemaker ssonnemaker@carson.k12.nv.us or 283-1600.

Last week, both the Chamber Singers and the concert choir sang in the University of Nevada, Reno Choral Festival. This was the first time since 1995 that CHS was represented at this event. There were 16 other high schools and 23 total groups. The concert choir was selected as the "outstanding large ensemble," and was asked to perform at the end of the evening in the Command Performance.

Erienne Overli, a junior at CHS, was recently elected lieutenant governor of Key Club for the district that encompasses Carson, Douglas, Whittell, & South Lake Tahoe. Key Club is the largest high school service organization in the world, which promotes community service, leadership development, and fellowship. Erienne will oversee the operations of the Key Clubs at the district level. Congratulations Erienne!

Some U.S. history students have been busy researching and preparing exhibits for the Nevada History Day competition. Nevada History Day is similar to the science fair, but projects center on a historical topic which is focused on a particular theme. The theme changes each year, and this year's theme is "Tragedy and Triumph."

The local competition will be Wednesday in Senator Square. The top five finishers in each division will advance on to the state competition March 24 at the Nevada State Library and Archives. Winners at the state competition have the opportunity to advance to Nationals at the University of Maryland in June.

Events this week at CHS: Math tutoring everyday after school.

Monday: CHS Relay for Life Kickoff Party at 6 p.m.

Wednesday: Nevada History Day Competition.

Saturday: Varsity swimming versus Churchill County at the Carson Aquatic Facility. Link Crew's Black and White Dance.
