The Carson High boys swim team got off to an outstanding start, winning a relays invitational held for High Desert League schools on Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Facility.
In the meet for all of Northern Nevada's large schools, Carson finished with 70 points to edge Reno High, which finished with 68 points. Spanish Springs was third (34) and was followd by Fallon (30), McQueen (26) and Galena (14).
Many of the schools in the meet were missing swimmers because Washoe County schools have begun their spring break and Carson wasn't at full strength as well.
In the girls meet, Carson finished fourth with 34 points behind Reno (74) and Galena and McQueen, which both finished with 50 points.
Carson's boys won the 200-medley, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle and 200 backstroke relays. Sam Ballard, Scott Wandel, Kevin Dyer and Nick Schlager won the medley, Ballard, Dyer, Adam Updegrove and Jacob Cornwell won the fly, Dyer, Paul Chang, Cornwell and Wandel won the 400 free and Ballard, Kurt Anderson, Updegrove and Cornwell won the back.
In addition, Updegrove, Paul Chang, Schlager and Luke Gentner were second in the 200 free relay Wandel, Chang, Alex Peckham and Kevin Kengott were fourth in the 200 breaststroke relay.
For the girls, Sarah Metcalf, Danielle Judge, Tatum Boehnke and Julie Asire were fourth in the 200 medley, Metcalf, Julia Lapham, Jill Stroup and Jamie Showalter were third in the 200 free relay, Barbara Perkins, Carrie Linn, Boehnke and Asire were fourth in the fly relay, Metcalf, Perkins, Lapham and Showalter were fourth in the back relay and Perkins, Asire, Boehnke and Lapham were fourth in the 400 free relay.
Anderson and Updegrove also had outstanding efforts in a diving invitational held for all Northern Nevada schools at the Carson Valley Aquatic Center. Updegrove was third and Anderson was fourth.
