Helping you get through the week

We cannot stress enough the importance of having a will. Just look at what happened when Mohammed didn't leave one: The relatives are still fighting 1,375 years later.

There'll be a Lenten Soup Supper at St. Teresa's on Friday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the church's Chartz Hall. Adult admission is $6, children $2.50, and under 7 free. (gee, we're "under 7" several times over ... does that mean we get "several" bowls of soup free?) Clam chowder, potato cheese, and vegetable are your choices in a bread bowl (for those of you who haven't eaten soup in a bread bowl before, you're SUPPOSED to eat the bowl, too) ... slurp!

Bon Voyage Saturday to Don Rudin, the executive chef at Mallard's at Empire Ranch Golf Course. He's off to the British Isles for a week. We hope he has a wonderful time.

Ken Fraser tell us the following: "A man was riding his Harley along a California beach when the sky became dark and the Lord's voice said to him: 'Because you have been faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish.' The amazed biker pulled over and asked, 'Would you build a bridge to Hawaii so I can ride over any time I please?' 'Goodness,' said the Lord, 'That's pretty materialistic. Think of the enormous challenges that presents ... supports, concrete, steel, etc. Why can't you think of something that would help mankind?' The biker thought about that and said, 'Lord, I wish that all men could understand women, how they feel, how they think, and how to make them happy.' There was a long silence, then the Lord said, 'Two lanes, or four?'"

If you want a good time on Friday and Saturday, go up to the John L. Harvey field and see the WNCC Wildcats play two double-headers against the Community College of Southern Nevada. Friday's times are 1 and 4; and Saturday's are noon and 3; $6 for adults; $3 for youth and seniors. You can yell for "Bondo," Fergie, Steve, Logan, and "Miller time," to name a few. The whole team is cute ... and are GOOOOOD! Vern Manke goes to all the games. Three cheers for him, too.

Guy Farmer (via his daughter Maria), sent us this slightly irreverent one: "Little Zachary was doing very badly in math. His parents tried everything, but nothing worked. As a last ditch effort, they enrolled him in a Catholic school nearby, and were surprised that after the first day they didn't have to urge him to do his homework or study. He went right up to his room each day and completed his work without a word. Soon he brought home his first report card and showed them an "A" in math. His mother could no longer hold her curiosity. 'Is it the nuns?' his mother asked. Zachary shook his head. 'Is it the books, the uniforms, the discipline? WHAT IS IT?' Little Z looked up at her and said, 'Well, on the first day of school, when I saw that guy nailed to the plus sign, I knew they weren't fooling around.'"

Okay, does anyone know what happened to the El Pollo Loco that was being built on Highway 50 East? We were looking forward to it, but things seem to be at a standstill. Anyone?

We saw Adam Whitney working at Joe Mango's (formerly Java Joe's) this week. He's going to be "Charlie" in the WNCC production of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," beginning Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center. Lucy, Snoopy, Linus and all the gang will be there. For a good time, call 445-4249 for tickets and information.

Also, coming to the Brewery (883-1976) is Durga, Goddess of the Drum, starring Liz Broscoe. It will be in the Performance Hall Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Her show features dancers and a multi-media presentation. Good stuff.

We were talking a while back about those square, yellow taxis we see around town. They're kinda cute, but it's the license plates we've seen on the square cars that got out attention. Judy DeRyke of Minden saw "Box Car" on one, and our favorite, "Fx in Box."

The cost of the war in Iraq keeps escalating. By next year, Newsweek (in its March 22 issue) says, it will top half a TRILLION dollars. They also say the "surge" of 21,000 troops, does NOT include the number of support troops who support our fighting men and women. But there is good news: Even though Britain is pulling out some of their troops, other nations are sending in more of theirs ... Republic of Georgia, Mongolia and Peru, to name three. We feel safer already. The bad news is, there isn't a Republican OR Democrat who's shown he or she has a viable "out" in Iraq. Where's a real "leader" when you need one?

The Olson family sent us this one: "Ma Tate answered a knock on the door last week, only to find a vacuum cleaner salesman there. 'Good day, Madam,' the nice, young salesman said. 'I'd like to show you the latest in high-powered vacuums today.' 'Go away, young man,' said Ma. 'I haven't got any money, I'm broke,' and she proceeded to close the door. Quick as a flash, the young man wedged his foot in the door, and pushed it open. 'Don't be so hasty,' he said. 'Not until you've seen my demonstration.' With that he flung a bucket of manure on the rug, saying, 'If my vacuum doesn't clean this up completely, I will personally eat the remainder.' Ma stepped back and said to him, 'Well, young man, I hope you have a good appetite ... my electricity was cut off this morning.'" Don't fool with old ladies!

And don't be fooled on April Fool's Day this Sunday. Soap on the toothbrush, maybe?
