Carson eighth graders win wrestling title

Carson Middle School's Cole McCarthy and Ricky McDonald were named among the outstanding wrestlers at the Tah-Neva State Championships held on Saturday in Yerington.

McDonald was named the outstanding middleweight wrestler after winning the 130-pound title for eighth graders while McCarthy was named the outstanding lower weight wrestler after winning the crown at 80 pounds. It was McDonald's third state title. Carson's eighth graders won the team title, finishing with 143 points to outdistance second place Yerington, which had 91 points.

Carson's seventh graders took fourth with 83 points, finishing behind Yerington (866), Battle Mountain (88) and Winnemucca (170). Other top finishers for Carson were:

Seventh grade: 75 - Willie McDonald, first; Kyle Sharp, second. 85 - Jordan Luhrs, third. 145 - Nick Garcia, second; Harrison Root, fourth. 120 - Alex Azzam, fourth.

Eighth grade: 85 - Brandon Akers, fourth. 90 - Pat Craugh, first. 100 - Adam Whitt, third. 105 - Gabe Pongasi, second. 125 - Tyler Collins, third; Eric Garcia, fourth. 135 - Connor Beattie, third. 140 - Nick Poole, third; Jimmy Weir, fourth. 160 - Caleb Jeffers, first. 175 - Ben Machuca, second; Eric Martin, fourth.
