CASA to start training

CASA of Carson City will begin training CASA volunteers from 6-9 p.m. today at the Carson City Juvenile Court, 1545 E. Fifth St. CASA volunteers advocate for children removed from the home due to abuse or neglect and serve as guardian ad litem under NRS 432b. Call 882-6776.

Airport Authority will meet tonight

The master plan subcommittee Workshop of Carson City Airport Authority meets at 6 p.m. today in the airport terminal building, 2600 College Parkway.

Items include discussions about the master plan and airport layout plans, Federal Aviation Administration requirements, the upcoming airport open house, vehicular traffic on the airport, and lease and business development issues.

Learn about the Trans-continental Railroad

Russ Tanner will present a program about the Trans-continental Railroad and it's relationship to the Nevada State Railroad Museum at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the museum, 2180 S. Carson St. Call 687-6953.

Mile High Jazz Band to hold May concert today

The Mile High Jazz Band will be holding its "Jazz in the Merry Month of May" concert from 8-10 p.m. today, at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson St. Admission is $5 general, $4 for association members and free for those age 18 and under.

From 6-7:30 p.m. there will be swing dance lessons for $5. Call 883-4154.

Disability advocates to receive awards

The Nevada Disability Advocacy and Law Center will host its seventh annual awards ceremony from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Sienna Hotel Spa Casino. The ceremony will honor nine individuals who have made efforts throughout Nevada to promote the rights of those with disabilities.

BLM to hold wildland fire meeting in Fallon

The Bureau of Land Management, Carson City Field Office, and contractor Wildland Fire Associates will hold a public meeting 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fallon Convention Center, 100 Campus Way, to receive public input from Churchill County residents about the risk of wildfire. Churchill County representatives will be present to answer questions.

Bird identification course starts today

The Lahontan Audubon Society will be hosting its series of five classes in basic bird identification starting today from 7-9 p.m. at the Nevada Division of Wildlife, 1100 Valley Road, in Reno. Cost is $40 for five classes or $10 per class, payable at the door. Classes are held today, May 15, 22, 30 and June 5. An instructional field trip to the Oxbow Nature Study will wrap up the course. Learn how to handle weeds at free workshop

Master Gardener coordinator Wendy Hanson will give a free workshop entitled "How to get a handle on weeds" from 6-7 :30 p.m. Wednesday at Rail City Garden Center, 1720 Brierley Way in Sparks.
