Dayton boys, Smith Valley teams win crowns

The Dayton High boys and Smith Valley boys and girls track teams continued to reign supreme in the Northern Championships.

Dayton's boys took step toward defending its NIAA 3A State title by winning Saturday's Northern 3A meet at Yerington. The Dust Devils won with 193 points to outdistance second place Spring Creek, which finished with 167 points.

Smith Valley's boys and girls swept the 1A titles. Smith Valley's boys rolled to the title, winning with 164 points while Sage Ridge was second with 64. Smith Valley's girls won with 141 points while Wells took second with 118.

Dayton's boys went 1-2 in the 100 and 200 meters. In the 100, Michael Martin won in 11.27 seconds while Bill Storrs was second in 11.49. In the 200, Storrs won in 22.78 while Trace Feemster was second in 23.21. Martin also won the 400 in 51.23.

In addition, Matt Cantwell, Erik Hopper, Rudy Reyna and Feemster won the 4x100 relay in 45.48. Storrs, James Yeater, Martin and Feemster won the 4x200 relay in 1:30.21. Josh Melia, Hopper, Yeater and Martin won the 4x400 as well for Dayton in 3:31.03.

Dayton's Paul Cox had an outstanding throw to win the discus at 154-0 while Dayton's Bill Savran won the shot put at 48-5 1/2

Other top local finishers included Fernley's Jacob Lehman, who won the high jump at 6-1. Hooper was second at 6-0.

James Roberts and Taylor Bonnet went 1-2 in the pole vault for Yerington as Roberts won at 12-6. Bonnet was second at 12-0. Storrs was third at 12-0 and Fernley's Kevin Martinez was fourth at 12-0.

Lehman also won the long jump at 21-11 1/2 while Feemster was second. Lehman added a third title in the triple jump, winning at 42-3.

Top local performers for the 3A girls included Yerington's Kiara Ross, who won the 100 in 13.16. Dayton's Rebecca Monzello won the shot put at 38-7 while Yerington's Kayla Lommori was second at 37-2. Lommori and Monzello switched places in the discus as Lommori won with an outstanding throw of 134-2 1/2 while Monzello was second at 114-2 1/2.

Kylee Gleason was a quadruple champion for Smith Valley's girls. Gleason won the 200 in 27.35, leading a 1-2-3 sweep as Tiffany Focha was second and Lesley Christensen was third.

Gleason won the 400 in an outstanding time of 58.11 and the 800 in 2:28.74. Gleason also won the pole vault at 11-6 and Focha won the 300 hurdles in 50.48. Gleason led a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the pole vault as Sarah Smith was second, Focha was third and Christensen was fourth. Smith also won the triple jump at 31-4.

For Smith Valley's boys, Wade Meddles won the 3,200 in 10:13.14, Tim Nelson won the 110 high hurdles in 16.11 and the 300 hurdles, Brody Deforest, Rico Fahlbusch, Taylor Reed and David Bozsik won the 4x200 in 1:46.35, Nelson won the pole vault at 12-0, Bozsik won the shot put at 44-0 and the discus at 142-0.
