Locals among Northern Nevada's best

The area was well-represented this year among the top 10 student-athletes selected by the Nevada Interscholastic Activies Association.

Northern Nevada's top 10 student-athletes are honored anually by the NIAA for the achievements in athletics, academics and community service. The top five male athletes and the top five female athletes are honored. All of the honorees were recognized at a banquet on Wednesday at the Atlantis.

Local athletes who were honored this year were Carson High's Nick Smallman, Dayton's Travis Wood and Stephanie Greer, Galena's Nancy Burrows and Eric Maupin and Smith Valley's Kylee Gleason. Here's a look at each of the athletes:

Nick Smallman - Smallman carries a 3.80 grade point average. He earned four varsity letters in tennis and three in baseball. In tennis, Smallman qualified with Bryt Lewis for the NIAA 4A State Championships in doubles this past fall. Smallman is a National Honor Society member, a Nevada Boys State delegate, Link Crew member and has been involved in SAIL, X-Factor, Relay for Life and blood drives.

Travis Wood - Wood has a 3.55 G.P.A. He earned 10 varsity letters in football (three), basketball (four), baseball (two) and golf (one). As Dayton's quarterback, he was the 3A State Offensive Player of the Year. he also earned first-team all-state honors in basketball and baseball. He helped lead Dayton to the state playoffs in football and basketball, including two state runner-up finishes in basketball.

He has directed youth football and basketball camps and has been involved in canned food drives. Wood will play football either at the University of Nevada or Sacramento City College.

Nancy Burrows - Burrows has a 3.88 G.P.A. She won four letters each in volleyball and skiing. She was the High Desert League Player of the Year in volleyball and helped Galena to two state titles her sophomore and junior years. She finished seventh in the state in the slalom and giant slalom in skiing.

She is a member of Galena's Earth Club and the GKOP Freshman Mentoring Program and is a tutor and volleyball coach. She will continue to play volleyball at Concordia College in Portland.

Eric Maupin - Maupin has a 3.49 G.P.A. Maupin won three varsity letters each in basketball and baseball. He earned all-league first team honors in both sports. He was also the High Desert League Pitcher of the Year this season.

Maupin helped lead Galena to the state title in basketball and to a state runner-up finish in baseball. He is currently being recruited heavily on the Division I level in baseball. He has worked as a Little League umpire and basketball camp instructor and was named the outstanding world history student. Maupin plans to major in physical therapy/sports medicine in college.

Stephanie Greer - Greer has a 4.0 G.P.A. and is Dayton Salutatorian. She earned six varsity letters in basketball (three), volleyball (two) and track (one). She was the team Most Valuable Player in basketball. She's a member of the National Honor Society and first chair flute in the school band. She participated in the Carson Valley Christian Faith mission trip to Kenya and is a member of the Student Leadership team at Carson Valley Christian Center. She plans to major in Biblical studies at Biola University.

Kylee Gleason - Gleason has a 4.0 G.P.A. and is Smith Valley's Salutatorian. She won 12 varsity letters, four each in volleyball, basketball and track. She was a three-time all-league pick in volleyball and the Northern IA Player of the Year in basketball.

She ended her career in track by winning 15 IA state titles and setting eight 1A state records. Gleason has cleared 12 feet in the pole vault.

She has volunteered at the St. Vincent's Homeless Shelter, for blood drives and as a tutor. She's been involved in student government. She's a National Honor Society member and a member of the Block S.V. Letterman's Club. She plans to compete in track in college.
