Seniors can sign up for free food coupons


Nevada has received funding from the USDA Food and Nutrition Program to provide free coupons for fresh fruits and vegetables to Carson City seniors 60 and older, whose annual income does not exceed $18,889 for an individual who receives one booklet or $25,327 for a couple who receive two booklets.


This year's coupon distribution is from 8:30-11 a.m. June 7 at the Fuji Park Exhibition Hall on Clear Creek Road. There will also be a free tasting of various fruits and vegetables plus valuable nutrition information.


Each eligible senior will receive one coupon booklet containing 15, $2 coupons redeemable for fresh fruits and vegetables at the Carson City Farmer's Market. Low-income seniors must fill out an application at the bi-monthly Commodity Foods Distribution today, from 9-11 a.m. at the Carson City Community Center, whether they take Commodity's or not, in order to receive their coupon booklets at Fuji Park on June 7.


The application must be filled out and left at the Community Center that day or seniors will not be able to get the coupons June 7.

Historical Society presents garden tour


The Carson City Historical Society presents the annual "Through the Garden Gate" home and garden tour noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The tour features nine locations, four of which are new to the tour.


New homes to the tour include the Smail House (White Cat Antiques), Adams House, Ballardini gardens, Hansen/Martino gardens. Other homes along the tour are the Roberts House, Bliss Mansion, Chartz House (Bliss Bungalow), Krebs-Peterson home, and the Greenhouse Garden Center. There will be refreshments and entertainment including Chris Bayer with his banjo, Mary Law with her harp and the Barbershop Quartet.


Cost is $10 for all tickets; children under 6 are free. Tickets are on sale at Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau, 1900 S. Carson Street; Greenhouse Garden Center, 2450 S. Curry; White Cat Antiques, 512 North Curry and Roberts House.


The tour is sponsored by the Historical Society, a nonprofit organization, and Carson City Redevelopment. Proceeds from the tour will be used to complete the restoration of the Carriage House at 1207 North Carson. Call Dorothy Dolan at 882-1805




Asthma Education Program offered at medical center


An Asthma Education workshop will be 9 a.m. June 2 in the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center Bristlecone Room. Patients, family members, and caregivers are invited to learn more about treatment and other topics, including: What is asthma, treating asthma, learning how to use a peak flow meter (supplied), and asthma triggers.
