Kyle Stone homered to lead off the game as the Carson Cardinals summer baseball team posted a 7-3 win against Douglas during action in the Reno Knights Memorial Day Weekend Tournament on Sunday.

Even though the win improved their tournament record to 3-2, the Cardinals missed out on a tie-breaker to advance to the championship round. Carson tied Galena and the Sierra Sun Devils for the final two qualifying spots from their pool, but the Cardinals finished third in the tie-breaker criteria of fewest runs allowed.

"I have no complaints," Carson coach Steve Cook said. "We were 3-2 and we were competitive against some very good teams. It was a pretty good team effort all the way around.

On Sunday, Carson scored four runs in the first inning, then David Perce and David Charles combined to pitch six solid innings in a winning cause against Douglas. David Eller started on the mound, but was lifted early due to stiffness in his shoulder. Perce, a senior-to-be at Carson High, came on to pitch four innings to earn credit for the win and Charles, who will be a sophomore next year, worked the final two innings to pick up the save.

Cody Barr contributed two hits while Rob Valerius drove in two runs for the Cardinals.

On Saturday, Brett Valley collected two hits, including a double, and scored Carson's only run in an 11-1 loss against Galena. Matt Rutledge homered in a 10-6 loss to the high-powered Reno Mud Dogs.
