Named after her aunt who survived breast cancer, 5-year-old Camryn Quilling has a legacy to uphold. As captain of a local Relay for Life team, she's doing just that.
"I'm very proud of her," said her mother and team recruiter, Brenda Quilling, who has been involved in Relay for Life since 2000. "She volunteered to be the captain and has brought together children and adults from Capital Christian Center, the day-care/school that she attends."
A fundraiser will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the I Paint for Joy ceramic studio, l4125 S. Carson St.
The regular studio fee will be waived and participants can paint a cancer ribbon with a $5 donation to the Carson City Relay for Life.
Donations, retail profits from sales of products from Arbonne International and proceeds from Saturday's event will benefit the Rhode Island team for the American Cancer Society's Carson City Relay for Life, which will take place at Carson High School on July 21-22.
Carson City has been involved with the relay for eight years.
Last year there were 18 teams. This year, it has grown to 70 teams. Every state in the United States is represented as well as 25 countries. The theme is patriotism.
Survivors and those touched by cancer unite at the July event.
