120 YEARS AGO

"A whaling experience": Dave Harris, son of the colored barber, returned to Carson from a whaling voyage. The boy, seeing not much in terms of employment in Nevada, went to San Francisco and sailed aboard the Josephine. On the basis of the current market, Dave got $150 for a year's work. Dave says that if a boy has an idea that a sailor's life is a picnic, he would advise him to change his mind.

100 YEARS AGO

Howard Mulcahy, cashier of the Bank of Sparks, narrowly escaped serious injury last week when the radiator of the car he was driving blew up as he sat at the steering wheel. Pieces of tubing flew past his ear, but he ducked before the second, larger explosion. - Journal.

70 YEARS AGO

Carl M. Barnes, representative of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, is in Carson today for the purpose of taking steps to enroll employees in the organization. It is an affiliate of the American Federation of Labor.

50 YEARS AGO

Carson police broke up two fights Saturday night, and charges were filed against a 21-year-old Carson woman. Police broke up one fight involving numerous contestants in the Nugget parking lot, but made no arrests. Officers had a more difficult time at Dick's Bar, where considerable damage was done by the woman. At the jail, the woman proceeded to knock windows out of the jail, and attempted to flood the cell before quieting down for the evening.

20 YEARS AGO

Derrick Readance, a medium-security prisoner serving a three-year sentence for conviction of a check forgery in Washoe County, walked away from a Zephyr Cove Forestry Conservation Camp early Monday.

10 YEARS AGO

One of every four students in Carson City schools gets a free or reduced price meal - more than ever before. Twice as many students today get assisted meals than did in 1980.
