Carson City

New park opens today at noon

The John Mankins Park will open today at noon. The three-acre park includes a picnic shelter, skateboard feature, large playground, two basketball courts, a baseball/softball field and a tennis court. A concrete walking path connects the various features throughout the park. Park, 3051 Oak Ridge Drive. To get there take College Parkway west of Carson Street to Oak Ridge Drive. Park hours will be dusk to dawn.

Reductions possible in Intercity tri-county bus service

The Regional Transportation Commissions of Washoe County and Carson City will hold an open house 4-6 p.m. Wednesday at the Carson City Library auditorium, 900 N. Roop St., on proposed reductions in parts of the RTC INTERCITY service between Reno, Carson City and Douglas County.

Jump Around Carson and the RTC INTERCITY have been operating along the same route between Carson City and Douglas County since JAC began operating in October 2005.

The area affected will be south of Little Lane along Roop and Carson Streets to Topsy Lane in Douglas County. For information, visit rtcwashoe.com or call 348-RIDE.

Video topic of PFLAG meeting

The video "Dealing With Difference: Dialog of Lesbian, Gay and Straight Issues" will be shown at the next meeting of PFLAG Carson Region 7 p.m. today at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Friendship Hall, 1201 N. Saliman Road.

PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) Carson Region is a newly formed chapter of PFLAG National. The mission of PFLAG is to promote the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends through support, education, and advocacy. Call 303-8031.

Program on Hoover Dam shown tonight at library

Carson City Library will present the third part of a four-part documentary series directed by Nevada State Archivist Guy Louis Rocha and videographer Gwen Clancy 7 p.m. today. The documentary titled, "They Died to Make the Desert Bloom" part of the series "Might is Right," and underwritten by the Nevada State AFL-CIO, is about the history of the Hoover Dam. Call 887-2244.

New driver training offered by WNC in Silver Springs

Western Nevada College is offering classes that will help new drivers remain safe when they're behind the wheel. Driver Education (CMSV 181C), a noncredit course which meets the requirements for a Nevada driver's license, for the first time in Silver Springs. Silver Stage High School will be the site for the Silver Springs class 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays, Nov. 17-Dec. 15.

To register, complete the WNC Community Education Admission Application at www.wnc.edu/drivereducation/ and then mail, fax or bring it in to WNC Carson City, 2201 E. College Parkway. After the application is processed students may register online. By using this application, students will not be accessed a $15 college application fee.

Presentation today on the upcoming GOP caucus

A presentation to educate and inform Douglas Country Republicans about the January 2008 caucus/precinct meetings will be noon today at the CIVIC Hall on Esmeralda Ave. There is no charge. UNR to celebrate building anniversary

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nightingale Concert Hall, Redfield Studio Theatre, Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery, the University of Nevada, Reno School of the Arts will host an open house at its Church Fine Arts Building from 5-8 p.m. today.

The evening of events will culminate with a performance by the University Percussion Ensemble with guest choreographer Lula Washington at 8 p.m. in Nightingale Concert Hall. All events are free.

Free parking after 6:30 p.m. is in the Brian J. Whalen Parking Complex north of the Church Fine Arts Building.
