Schenzel shines for JWU men's soccer

Carson High graduate Jeremiah Schenzel recently helped lead the Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team of Rhode Island to two wins last week. Schenzel had a hat trick, scoring three goals in one of the wins.

JWU beat Lasell 3-1 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game. JWU scored first on an assist by Schenzel when Scott Kirchner took a cross from Schenzel, a junior, on a breakaway and scored.

With the win Johnson & Wales is now undefeated in their last five games and improves to 4-2-3 overall and 3-0 in the GNAC.

Schenzel scored three goals in a 7-3 win over Rivier in another conference game for JWU, a Division III school.

Tigersharks strong at Autumn Freeze

Mikel Flatley was a triple winner and Matt Grunert and Garrett Clayton were double winners for the Carson Tigerharks Swim Club on Sunday in the final day of the Autumn Freeze held at the Carson Valley Aquatic Center.

In 6 and under girls, Mikel Flatley won the 25-yard butterfly and the 50 and 100 freestyles. In 15-18 boys, Clayton won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke while Grunert won the 200 backstroke and the 100 freestyle. Other top finishers for the Tigersharks were:

15-18 boys: Kevin Dyer - 100 free, second; 200 I.M., third. Paul Chang - 100 breaststroke, third. 15-18 girls: Tatum Boehnke - 200 butterfly, third. Julie Asire - 100 free, second; 200 back, third. 8 and under boys: Spencer Lang, 25 back, third. 8 and under girls - Kelsey Bradley, 25 fly, third; 100 free, third. 6 and under boys: River Flatley - 25 fly, second; 100 free, second.

Tahoe Grizzlies drop two in ice hockey

The Tahoe Grizzlies Norcal Pee Wee Travel Ice Hockey team dropped two pre-season games this past weekend to the Santa Rosa Flyers and the Oakland Bears.

The Grizzles lost on Saturday to Santa Rosa by a score of 6-1. The lone Grizzly score came from T.J. Olsen of Carson City. Goalie Jacob Gordon of Minden stopped 27 shots. The Grizzlies received solid performances from Luke Weinberg and Riley Budd of South Tahoe, and Tasha Aiken of Minden.

On Sunday the Grizzlies lost 4-2. Olsen scored in the first period aDaniel Pearson of Reno scored on an assist from D.J. Freeman of Carson City can in the third period. Connor Bills of Virginia City and Heath Sunseri of Gardnerville played well defensively. Gordon stopped 21 shots.

The Grizzlies will play the San Francisco Spiders at 11:15 a.m. this Saturday and 8 a.m. this Sunday.
