120 YEARS AGO

At noon yesterday Mill No. 1, belonging to the Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Flume Co., caught fire and burned to the ground. A barge moored near the mill and loaded with cord wood was also burned. The loss will reach $30,000 and is partially insured. The work of rebuilding will begin at once.

100 YEARS AGO

Two incorporations were filed today in the office of the county clerk. One was a certificate of the increasing of number of directors of the Pacific Coast Improvement Co. and the other was the incorporation of the Leisure Hour Club. On the papers were Nellie V. Davis, Stella G. Colcord, Hugh H. McCreery, Emma V. Doane, E. D. Vanderlieth, C.F. Cutts and G.F. Talbot. It is the intention of the club to erect a magnificent club house in this city early in the coming spring.

70 YEARS AGO

The Catholic Confraternity campaign last night in Reno reached a total of $76,030 as the pastors of the various parishes prepared to make a concerted appeal at all masses tomorrow morning. Carson City, Sparks and Austin parishes were reported as "over the top" last night. Ely continues to lead all of Nevada's 15 parishes on a percentage basis, with nearly 200 percent of the quota set.

50 YEARS AGO

The Atomic Energy Commission has announced contracts for an additional $2 million in construction at Jackass Flats nuclear rocket propulsion site. A total of $4.5 million in construction has be allocated for the site, which is located near the Yucca Flat atomic proving grounds. Nuclear rocket tests are to begin in 1958.

20 YEARS AGO

Stretch limousines were added Friday to the list of products Nevada convicts may build in expanding industry programs along with cabinets and containers for video and music tapes. Prison Director George Sumner added the car venture would give inmates a sense of pride.

10 YEARS AGO

Dee Walters, former manager of Carson City's homeless shelter known as Focus House, died suddenly at her home in Elko. Dee managed the Carson City Friends In Service Helping Focus House program until 1988, when Elko formed a program of its own modeled after FISH.
