Aides: Las Vegas special education teacher hit students in class
LAS VEGAS (AP) - A judge says he'll review transcripts and hear closing arguments before deciding whether to bind a Las Vegas special education teacher over for trial on felony child abuse and neglect charges.
Two teacher's aides testified Wednesday that they saw Mamie Hubbard-Washington hit, pinch, push and verbally abuse students, including some with autism who do not speak.
Parents testified Sept. 26 about their children coming home with bruises from Hubbard-Washington's class at Reed Elementary School.
Hubbard-Washington, 64, is on leave from the Clark County School District. She remains free without bail.
Justice of the Peace William Jansen scheduled closing arguments Oct. 31.
Reno school locked down after threat
RENO (AP) - A Reno high school was locked down Thursday after police received a call that a juvenile had a gun and was threatening to shoot up the school, authorities said.
A dispatcher received the call shortly before 8 a.m., before classes had started at Hug High School, said police spokesman Steve Frady.
Reno officers and Washoe County School District police searched the buildings and campus, and no weapons were found, Frady said.
Classes resumed about two hours later, but the campus remained off limits to outsiders.
The school district set up a center at a nearby restaurant for parents who wanted to talk to their children or take them home.
Frady said officers planned to patrol neighborhoods surrounding the school throughout the day.
