South Tahoe security guard arrested

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - A high school security guard has been arrested on suspicion of giving police misleading statements regarding a May 2 assault outside a South Lake Tahoe church.

26-year-old Irma Salazar was arrested Friday at South Tahoe High School on a charge of being an accessory to a felony.

El Dorado County Assistant District Attorney Hans Uthe says the information Salazar provided to police "caused trouble" in their investigation of the fight outside St. Theresa Catholic Church.

A group of men are accused of beating up and robbing a 22-year-old Kings Beach man in what police believe was a gang-related incident.

Uthe contends Salazar is "at least friendly" with a Hispanic gang in South Lake Tahoe.

Official finalist for Washoe schools chief

RENO (AP) - A Clark County School District administrator is among six finalists in the running to replace retiring Washoe County School District Superintendent Paul Dugan.

Robert Alfaro, a regional superintendent from Las Vegas, was the only Nevadan selected Friday as a finalist.

Other finalists are public school administrators Heath Morrison of Rockville, Md.; Gary Larsen of Nampa, Idaho; Karst Brandsma of Everett, Wash.; and Pedro Martinez of Chicago.

Another finalist is Dennis Dearden of Cary, N.C., senior vice president of Partnership for Excellence.

Interviews for finalists will be held Monday and Tuesday.

Mixed news in Vegas tourism report

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Tourism officials say the number of visitors coming to Las Vegas fell 3 percent in April compared to the same month last year.

That brought the total number of visitors for the year to nearly 12 million people - down more than 7 percent compared to the 2008 pace. The figures were released Friday in a monthly tourism report compiled by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Officials saw both good and bad news in the report. The 2.9 percent drop in total visitors was the smallest percentage decline in nearly a year.
