Western Nevada baseball wins fall finale

The Western Nevada College baseball team finished its fall scrimmage season with a tie and a win in a doubleheader against Modesto (Calif.) College on Friday at John L. Harvey Field.

After the second game of a doubleheader was suspended after four innings on Thursday, it was decided that the two teams would just play two seven-inning games on Friday.

The two teams played 14 innings without taking a break. The two teams tied in the opener 6-6, then the Wildcats won the nightcap 5-2.

In the opener, Western Nevada took a 1-0 lead in teh first when Brett Moravec walked and Marshall Kinnebrew singled. Moravec eventually scored on a bad pickoff throw to first.

Western Nevada took a 2-0 lead in the second after Darren Bruhns and Kevin Schlange singled. Victor Nunuez followed with a sacrifice bunt and Bruhns scored on Logan Odom's RBI groundout.

Wildcat starting pitcher James Crockett pitched two scoreless innings, but was touched for three runs in the third. The Wildcats came back to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third. Schlange's RBI sacrifice fly tied the score and Odom's RBI infield single gave the Wildcats a 4-3 lead.

Modesto scored two runs in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. Lance Ray tripled and scored on Marshall Kinnebrew's RBI sacrifice fly to pull Western Nevada to within 6-5 in the bottom of the fourth.

Jordan Blanchard allowed one earned run over three innings for the Wildcats. He also struck out two batters to escape a jam with runners at second and third and one out in the sixth. Matt Klein pitched a scoreless seventh.

The Wildcats received a break in the bottom of the seventh when Schlange reached on a dropped popup. Schlange eventually scored on Odom's RBI single to force the 6-6 tie. Odom and Kinnebrew each had two hits and Mike Long added a hit for the Wildcats.

Klein stayed on the mound and ended up as the starting pitcher in the nightcap. He pitched three scoreless innings before giving up two unearned runs in the fourth.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the second when Bruhns walked, stole second and scored on Travis Feiner's single. Western Nevada took a 3-2 lead in the fourth in RBI singles by Jerome Pena and Lance Ray.

Brian Barnett's RBI single and Lance Ray's RBI sacrifice fly gave the Wildcats a 5-2 lead in the sixth. Tyler Waters pitched two scoreless innings and Morevac pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the save. Feiner and Pena each had two hits and Kyle Gutchewsky added a hit.

SOUTH 8, NORTH 0

The South all-stars consisting of sophomores from Western Nevada, Community College of Southern Nevada and Eastern Utah College beat the North all-stars consisting of players from Southern Idaho College, Salt Lake Community College and Colorado Northwestern College in the Scenic West Athletic Conference all-star game in Southern Nevada.

For the Wildcats, Cliff Shepard went 1-for-1 with two walks, Logan Parsley went 0-for-1 with a walk and also had an outstanding diving catch in the outfield, Andrew Reid had a hit and Chuck Howard went 0-for-2 with a walk. All three of Western Nevada's pitchers, Wes Osmer, Josh Suarez and Josh Creveling will pitch today when the two teams play again at noon.
