Lyon County officials to consider Highway 50 Corridor Study

The Nevada Department of Transportation is asking the Lyon County Commissioners to approve the Highway 50 Corridor Study, but will implement the study even if they don't.

Sandy Stenio, NDOT's local government liaison, will present the study at the commission meeting Thursday and ask for a vote of support.

"We'll ask them to vote in support of it," she said. "But it's a formality."

NDOT began the study with stakeholder's meetings in October 2005, and finished it nearly two years later.

It was done to plan for future needs from the freeway interchange at Highway 50 in Carson City east to Leeteville Junction in Churchill County.

Among the recommendations of the study are to establish park-'n'-ride lots with an active ride-share program; establish a transit service; provide an eastbound left-turn lane for Iron Mountain Ranch Estates; convert the Highway 95A and Highway 50 intersection into a high-speed roundabout; provide dynamic message signs and install a traffic signal at State Route 341 and Highway 50.

The only aspects of those recommendations that are funded are the left-turn lane at Iron Mountain and the traffic signal at 341 and 50.

Stenio said the State Route 341-Highway 50 intersection will be reconfigured into a four-way, adding a frontage road onto the south side of Highway 50.

"It was silly to make it a three-way," she said. "They're going to put in a four-way intersection with a frontage road so that people living on the south side of the road can get onto the highway."

She said the frontage road would lead from Jeanette Drive to Yhvona Drive, and that a public hearing on the issue would be scheduled.
