CHS girls golf finishes second to Douglas again

The Douglas High girls golf team was tough enough to beat in the Sierra League opening tournament.

But now that Douglas is at full strength, the Tigers look to be tougher than ever. Douglas won the Sierra League Tournament for the second straight week on Tuesday at Northgate. The Tigers won going away, finishing with a 444 score.

Carson finished second for the second straight week, finishing with a 476. Last week, the Senators lost to Douglas by just six strokes. But Douglas was without one of its players last week.

This week, the Tigers were at full strength and Carson coach Terry Gingell said that was the difference. But Gingell also said he was still pleased with his team play, especially his top two players, Lydia Peri and Michelle Kop, who both had solid rounds.

Peri was third with an 84 while Kop was fourth with an 87. "They both played very well," Gingell said. "I'm pleased with their games."

Douglas freshman Bethany Wurster won for the second straight week, shooting a 1-under-par 71. She won the tournament by 10 strokes. "An excellent score," Gingell said. "She's a very good player."

Also for Carson, Julia Lapham shot a tournament best 99, Katie Copperthwaite also fired a 99, Chelsea Keating had a 107 and in her first tournament, freshman Whitney Nash had a 125.

"That's not a great score for Chelsea," Gingell said. "But she'll bounce back from this, no problem."

The Senators also easily outdistanced Reno High, which finished third with a 506. "We can improve on our team score there's no question about it," Gingell said.

"It will be hard to beat Douglas. If we put it all together we'll get close to them. We've got a shot."
