Jazz Band joins poets at Sept. 11 concert


The Mile High Jazz Band will be joined by award-winning poets Krista Benjamin, Terri Breedin, Rita Geil, and Suzanne Roberts for an evening of jazz and poetry at Comma Coffee from 8-10 p.m. today


The topic, "Sound and Silence," will acknowledge the date, but also be a tribute to life. All are welcome.


Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson St. is across the street from the Legislative Building. Admission is $5 general, $4 for members of the Mile High Jazz Band Association, and free for ages 18 and under.


David Bugli, leader and pianist for the Band, said "The program, 'Sound and Silence,' will alternate poetry readings with music, inspiring the audience to discover the connections between the poems and the tunes."

DAR donates flag to college's baseball stadium


The Daughters of the American Revolution, Battle Born chapter, will donate an American flag to Western Nevada College 11 a.m. today. The flag will hang at John L. Harvey Field. Baseball coach DJ Whittemore and other college officials will be at the field to accept the gift.


Official ribbon cutting for new theater today


Carson City Chamber of Commerce hosts the official ribbon cutting, reception, tour and complimentary movie 6 p.m. today at the Galaxy Fandango. RSVP is a must. For information or to make a reservation contact 882-1565.




Learn about being a CASA volunteer at Wednesday meeting


Court Appointed Special Advocates of Carson City will hold an informational meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Carson City Juvenile Court, 1545 E. Fifth St. Interested in helping children? Become a CASA volunteer. During this one-hour meeting learn how to make a difference for children by becoming a CASA volunteerÐadvocating for children who come into the court process through an abuse/neglect case or a family dispute case. Meeting coming up for Desert Brushes painting club


The Carson Valley Desert Brushes will meet 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnson Lane Firehouse, 1450 Stephanie Way in Minden.

The International Association of Administrative Professionals/Valley in the Sierras chapter, meets at 5:30 p.m. today at Sierra Pacific Power Co. Cafeteria, 100 Neil Road in Reno.
