CHS boys win, girls lose in penalty kicks

It was an anticlimatic finish for the Carson High boys and girls soccer teams at a tournament in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on Thursday.

Another downpour that covered the field with six inches of rain prevented the Carson teams from playing in their championship games. So the titles were decided by penalty kicks after a substantial amount of sand was poured in the penalty kick area so the kicks could be taken.

Carson's boys ended up winning the title 4-3 against Cecytec, Mexico - a team they also beat in penalty kicks on Wednesday - while the CHS girls lost 2-1 in penalty kicks to CBTIS, Mexico, a team they had beaten 5-2 in their tournament opener.

The boys game was set to go to five kicks and a sixth kick was needed to break the tie. Goalie Brandon Briggs made two saves on Cecytec's final two shots to help give Carson the win.

Cecytec led 1-0 after its goalie made a save. John Nuthall and Brady Roser converted their kicks, but Carson still trailed 3-2 after four kicks. Drew Good converted his try on the fifth kick to keep the Senators alive and the Briggs made a save to force a sixth kick. After Jorge Guevara converted on the sixth try, Briggs made another save to give Carson the win.

In the girls game, the teams were set to take three kicks, with four kicks needed to decided the girls title. Amanda Osborne converted her kick to tie the score 1-1.

Goalie Jen Johnson was able to make the save on CBTIS' second kick, but Carson missed on its next three kicks. After CBTIS missed on its third kick, it converted on its fourth.

Carson will host South Tahoe on Saturday, with the girls game at 11 a.m. and the boys contest at 1 p.m.
