Misfits play to benefit historical society

"Asparagus Blight and the Single Girl," or "I'll Blow You All to Bits," a humorous melodrama by the Misfits Theater Production will be performed at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday at Chuck's Old West Grill, formerly the Odeon Hall, 65 Pike St., Dayton.

The melodrama is about silver coming to the surface of the earth in an asparagus farm. Proceeds from Saturday's show will go to the Historical Society of Dayton Valley project to restore Dayton's 1881 Carson & Colorado Railroad Depot.

Family Literacy Night at Sutro

Sutro Elementary School will be open 5:30-7 p.m. on Wednesday for Family Literacy Night.

Families are encouraged to come and participate in hands-on activities with Thinking Maps, spelling, and optimizing student study and homework time. Parents and students are also encouraged to check out the Scholastic Book Fair, where they may purchase books to read and share at home.

Animal program at Dayton State Park

Animal Tracks, Animal Scats: Who Visits Here? will be 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Dayton State Park.

Discover who visits the park other than people. Take a leisurely walk through the park to identify animal's tracks and "other" evidence of their presence at this hands-on workshop. Sandals not recommended. There will be charts and books on hand to help with the search. Meet in the group area pavilion.

Learn how to build, maintain bird feeder

Become a Bird Brain and Build a Bird Feeder program will be from 1-3 p.m. Oct. 6 at Dayton State Park.

Spend some time this winter watching the antics of birds flocking to your own bird feeder. Jacque Lowery, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Reno will trek to Dayton to educate on how to identify wild birds and the proper foods to feed them from pinecone and plastic bottle feeders. The park will provide the materials for the bird feeders and Jacque will provide the seed. Program limited to 25 participants. Call 687-5678 to reserve space. Meet in the group use pavilion.

Public hearings on Highway 50 corridor study

The Nevada Department of Transportation will hold two public hearings on the recently completed Highway 50 Corridor study.

The study covers 52 miles of Highway 50 from the recently completed Carson City Freeway to the junction of Highway 95A.

The first meeting will be 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday at the McAtee Building, 2475 Fort Churchill Road, Silver Springs. The second will be that same day from 4-7 p.m. at the Lyon County Utilities Building, 34 Lakes Boulevard in Dayton. The corridor study is available online at www.us50corridorstudy.com/home

An open forum format will be used throughout the meetings to increase the opportunity for public comment and provide one-on-one discussion with staff members and stakeholders.

Learn to dance at Dayton center

A dance for ages 16 and older, featuring local performers Don and Nadine, will be the first and third Fridays of each month at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St.

Dance lessons will be 8-8:30 p.m. and the dance will go until 10 p.m. Fox-trot, waltz, swing, Latin, country line dance and polka steps will be taught.

Cost is $5 per person, with potluck desserts for the first Friday. The third Friday is a cost of $10 per person with bottled water and snacks provided. Call Denise at 246-6227.

April Verch Band to play in Fallon

The Churchill Arts Council will present the critically acclaimed April Verch Band at the Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Park St., Fallon, at 8 p.m. Sept. 29. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and there will be a no-host bar. Quilt show seeks vendors

Quilters and vendors are sought for the Silver Springs Entertainment and Arts Quilt Show Oct. 6-7. The deadline to enter is Oct. 2.

Carolyn Susac will be the featured judge for the show, slated for the new Silver Springs Senior Center, 2945 Fort Churchill Road, Silver Springs. Hours will be from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 6 and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 7.

There will be vendors, demonstrations and hourly prize drawings. The Golden Needle Quilt Club is assisting SSEA this year.

Old-fashioned camp meeting at Baptist church

Faith Baptist Church in Silver Springs is holding its fifth annual old-fashioned camp meeting Sept. 28-30 at the church, 5715 Elm St. in Silver Springs.

The church is hosting some of the best independent fundamental Baptist preachers. Events include soul-stirring preaching, horseshoe contests, burro rides, a cowboy carnival, petting zoo and other activities.

The weekend starts at 7 p.m. Friday with preaching and concludes Sunday with an evening service and testimonies. Bring a tent, RV or just themselves for a weekend of God and fun. Call 577-9600.

Virginia City

Lounge Lizards returning to Piper's

The Austin Lounge Lizards will perform at Piper's Opera House on Sept. 29.

The offbeat bluegrass band has performed several times at the opera house in past years. They like to poke fun at politics, love, music and the culture in general.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. but the bar at Piper's will be open half an hour before. Tickets are $25.

Outhouse races next month

Virginia City's World Championship Outhouse Races will be held in Oct. 6-7.

The event begins Oct. 6 with parade through the center of town. Races begin at 1 p.m. and continue every half hour until 5:30 p.m. They run from noon-3 p.m. Oct. 7.

V&T Beer and Brats ride

The first V&T Railroad Beer and Brats Train ride, will be 4 p.m. Oct. 13.

The train will feature beer and brats, and will go to the new track to American Flats.

Cost is $35, which includes train ride, food and Oktoberfest music.
