Wildcats finish off sweep against Astros

The Western Nevada baseball team finished off an impressive sweep of the Reno Astros in three scrimmages over this past weekend.

Western Nevada swept a doubleheader on Saturday, winning the opener 10-6 and the nightcap 5-1. It was an encouraging sign for the Wildcat staff that it pitched so well in the last game of the series.

"I think it was the best pitched of the three games, which is nice," Carson coach D.J. Whittemore said. "It showed some depth."

In the opener, Kyle Farrell, Matt Kleine and Josh Suarez combined to hold Reno to three runs in six innings. Kleine induced a key double player in the second and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings.

Andrew Reid hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. The Wildcats broke the game open with five runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead.

In the fourth, the Wildcats used some wild pitching, two hit batsmen, a sacrifice bunt and an error for their rally. Cliff Shepard and Logan Odom both had RBI singles in the rally.

Lance Ray had a hit and three runs, Reid also scored three runs, Davis Banks had a hit and an RBI, Shepard ws 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs and Odom added two hits.

In the nightcap, Josh Creveling and James Nygren each pitched two scoreless innings and Javy Perez and Donald Broderick each pitched a scoreless inning.

Brian Barnett had an outstanding day as he went 4-for-4 with a double, triple, two RBI, two runs and two stolen bases. The Wildcats scored three runs in the first after there were two outs and nobody on.

Howard walk, Banks singled and Barnett followed with a two-run triple. Marshall Kinnebrew then hit an RBI single to make it 3-0. Kyle Gutchewsky RBI sacrifice fly made it 4-0 in the second and Boomer Godsill's RBI sacrifice fly made it 5-0 in the third.

Gutchewsky, Howard and Nate Whalin all added a hit. The Wildcats will next play at 11 a.m. this Saturday against Feather River Community College at John L. Harvey Field.
