Carson City

Railroad Museum cranking up Motor Car for rides

The Nevada State Railroad Museum at 2180 South Carson St. will host a special run of the 1926 Edwards Motor Car this weekend. The Motor Car will run every 30 minutes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Edwards Railway Motor Car Co. was formed in the early 1920s by Harry P. Edwards to construct gasoline-powered railcars, or "doodlebugs" as they were commonly called. The cars were marketed primarily for shortline and branchline service.

20-30 Club steps behind the bar for charity

Join the ladies of the Sierra Nevada Active 20-30 Club at 8 p.m. on Saturday at Backroads Bar & Grill as they step behind the bar and serve drinks for charity. Sponsored by Capital Beverage and Samuel Adams, the event will host a live performance from southern rock band, Big Bad Wolf. Backroads Bar & Grill is located at 2244 Meridian Way off Airport Road in Minden. The event will begin at 8 p.m. Drink specials will include $2 Sam Adams, shot specials and a 50/50 raffle. Beginning guitar class offered

Wild Horse Productions and musician Chris Bayer have teamed up to offer a Beginning Guitar Workshop at 1 p.m. Saturday.

This 90-minute session will focus on how to chord, strum, and learn simple songs to play on the guitar.

Bring an acoustic guitar, preferably a nylon string guitar - especially people who have never played before. This workshop is to give parent and child a clear direction on how to pursue this musical avenue if the child shows some interest and talent in the guitar.

Sparks casino hosts Beatles' tribute

The music of the '60s generation often set the tone for how people related to their experiences.

Relive it all with "When We Were Fab - A Tribute to the Beatles," Friday and Saturday in the Celebrity Showroom at John Ascuaga's Nugget.

"When We Were Fab" is a historical perspective of the turbulent decade, with the centerpiece being a tribute to The Beatles.

The retrospective, interactive show continues from there, chronicling the rest of the decade with video, multiple costume changes and performances of memorable Beatles tunes, including a set of Sgt. Pepper classics.

Reno Philharmonic to open season

The Reno Philharmonic season opens Sunday and Tuesday with cellist Alisa Weilerstein returning for a third time to perform with the Philharmonic. Joining Weilerstein will be another returning artist, violinist Karen Gomyo. The violinist appeared previously with the orchestra in 2002. The Sunday performance is at 4 p.m. and Tuesday performance is at 7:30 p.m.

The duo will perform the Brahms' Double Concerto for Cello and Violin. Also on the program is "Symphonic Dances from West Side Story," which was the opener for the 2004-05 Season. Ravel's "Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2," a vivid and exciting piece new to the Philharmonic Orchestra audience, rounds out the concert.

Prices start at $26 with discounts available to seniors. Students with valid student ID can come early for "rush" seating a half-hour before performance for $8. Fundraiser for National Pony Express Conference will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Washoe Lake State Park Equestrian Area. Check in between 9:30-10:30 a.m. Cost is $15 per hand if pre-registered or $20 the day of the ride. Cash prizes. For information contact 267-2059.

Virginia City

Prayer bead workshop scheduled

A prayer bead workshop will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Virginia City.

Eleanor Wiley will conduct the workshop. Cost is $45 per person, which includes lunch and a basic supply of beads. More beads will be available for those who wish to purchase more or they may bring their own.

The community is welcome; payment will be accepted at the door.
