Carson City

First lady to speak at breast cancer event

As part of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The Women's Health Connection Program - in partnership with the Nevada State Health Division and its Bureau of Community Health, and the Nevada Health Center's Mammovan - is hosting a health fair at the Nevada State Library Archives Building 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

First Lady Dawn Gibbons will participate in the kick off event of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month at 10 a.m. Monday at the Nevada State Library and Archives Building.

Public employees group to meet

The Carson City Chapter of Retired Public Employees of Nevada will hold its next meeting at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Senior Citizens Center. The guest speaker will be Rev. McCord will speak on services provided by the hospital chaplain. For information call 883-6334.

Stunt show set as fundraising reward

The students at Bethlehem Lutheran School exceeded their goal of $9,000 profit for their fall fundraiser. As a reward a BMX Extreme Stunt Show will be 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the school in the parking lot between the church and the school, 1837 N. Mountain St. The community is invited to come and enjoy the show.

Carson Democrats hosting UNR professor

Carson City Democrats will meet 7 p.m. Wednesday at 709 E. Robinson St. Professor Emma Sepulveda, UNR Foundation Professor and Director of Latino Research Center will be the guest speaker. Robyn Mercer of "ONE" the campaign to fight global AIDS and extreme poverty will also speak. The Nevada Caucus and its progress will also be discussed. Kat Simmons offers comedy class

Kat Simmons is back by popular demand teaching her stand-up comedy workshop

at The Carson Valley Inn. The class begins on Monday and runs for the next six weeks. Class time is from 6:30-8:30 p.m. There will be a public showcase on the last night of class which is open to the public.

The fee for the six week workshop is $215.

Food for fines program returns to library

The Douglas County Public Library is presenting Food for Fines beginning Monday through Oct. 20. For each can or box of nonperishable food donated, patrons may choose to waive an overdue fine or select a free book from the library's sale rack. All proceeds will go to the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. The Douglas County Public Library is located at 1625 Library Lane in Minden and 233 Warrior Way in Zephyr Cove. Reno

Artists Co-op names guest artist

Galina Milton will be a guest artist at the Artists Cooperative of Reno from Monday through Nov. 17. Ukrainian born, Galina has lived in the United States for 10 years and studied at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. She paints people in an impressionistic style with exceptional talent.

An artist reception will be held on Oct. 7 from 1-4 p.m. at the Coop at 627 Mill St. in Reno. Artists Erik Holland and Patti Woodard will be showing in a special exhibit also.

Landscape workshops to focus on pruning

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will hold two free "Coffee With Friends" landscape workshops at 6:30 a.m. and noon Wednesday at University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, 5305 Mill St., Reno. To learn proper tree pruning techniques, join Mike Kelly, Sparks urban forester, for a workshop and demonstration of "Urban Tree Pruning."

These presentations are part of the "Coffee With Friends" series of free landscape presentations hosted by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, as a community service.
