Though the changes may seem subtle, patrons of the Carson Horseshoe Club, a downtown locals' casino since 1973, will be treated to some updating and upgrades not generally associated with whiling time away on the penny slots.

A three-phase remodel culminated in the re-do of the club's "Victory Hall" wing. The hall, which will feature new ticket-in/ticket-out slots, also boasts vaulting ceilings and a new ventilation system to keep that "spring-cleaned" smell of newly remodeled quarters in tact, club officials said.

Most notably, the club will now feature the "Alley Cafe," a place patrons can purchase espresso, coffee, bagels and wraps - a place to "refresh, replenish and sit down and enjoy a cup," said Kristy Servati, the club's marketing director.

"I guess with a new ventilation system and a little coffee shop, (the club) is going to be even more inviting," she said. "It's a place to congregate."

A grand re-opening of the remodeled wing will take place from 4-8 p.m. today. Complimentary food and beverages - including champagne - will be served, along with prizes and drawings, Servati said.

"We've been slowly remodeling for a couple years in the inside and now we feel like this is a good time to take a look around and celebrate what's new," she said. "Now, we've got to concentrate on putting the (finishing) touches on the outside."

Servati said the interior remodel is the first major work done on the casino since the early 1970s.

Jeanette Chaney, daughter of the club's late founder Gene Chaney, has run the casino for the past seven years and has been "ramping up" amenities for the club's 35th anniversary celebration - set to take place in June - Servati said.

"We're going to have a lot of (events) coming up," she said. "We're going to start giving out uncirculated tokens (Sunday) as prizes.

"We'll also probably print some new ones for the anniversary. Those (tokens) are collectors' items."
