Volunteers needed for sheriff's mounted posse

The Carson City Sheriff's Department is looking to increase its Mounted Reserves.

Positions are open for people who own a horse and a way to transport it, and would be willing to go through the training needed to be a member, said Mounted Commander Joe Bruno.

The all-volunteer reserve unit currently has 11 law enforcement volunteers and six civilians who work crowd control at events and assist in search-and-rescue operations.

Bruno said he is hoping to reach active, Peace Officers Standards and Training-certified law enforcement personnel interested in taking part in the program.

Civilians who volunteer will be required to complete a 220-hour, one-time course of study with the POST academy and a 40-hour Mounted Police Basic School yearly.

Applications for the mounted posse can also be picked up at the front counter of the Carson City Sheriff's office.

Fundraiser to offset costs of local's surgery

The Feisty Goat Pub will hold a fundraiser Sunday to help pay for costs related to a kidney transplant for a 23-year-old Carson City man.

The fundraiser for Andy Pitlock will be from 2-7 p.m. at the pub, 1881 E. Long St.

There will be drawings for raffle prizes and free beer given for a donation.

Pitlock, son of Joanne and Michael Pitlock, will have the surgery May 8.

His aunt, Carol Coble of Freeland, Wash., is donating one of her kidneys for the surgery.

Pitlock survived a heart transplant when he was 6, but has to undergo dialysis 10 to 12 hours a day.

Pitlock and his family will leave May 1 for Loma Linda University Medical Center Transplantation Institute in California for the surgery.

After that, he is required to stay for six weeks to recuperate.

All donations will go directly to Pitlock and his family to help with travel, lost income and general expenses.

The surgery will be covered by insurance, but all other costs have to be covered.

Donations can also be dropped off at the pub anytime.

Hardware store to open at H-D venue

A national hardware chain plans to open a store this summer in the former Harley-Davidson building in Northgate Plaza.

Harbor Freight Tools, one of the largest tool and equipment retailers in the country, is scheduled to open in late July, according to the company.

The store will take up about half of the 35,000-square-foot building and employ between 12 and 20 workers.

Harley-Davidson had been there since 1998. It left in December to open a new dealership on Research Way.

Northgate Movies 10, which had been in the plaza for more than 25 years, closed in February.

Northgate Plaza is a 101,000-square-foot, six-building center on North Carson Street, south of College Parkway.

The property is owned by Los Angeles-based Standard Management Co.

El Pollo Loco opens in Carson City Monday

El Pollo Loco, a fast-food chain specializing in flame-grilled chicken dishes, will open its first Carson City store Monday.

The restaurant, 1923 Highway 50 E., will be the 17th in Nevada. There are close to 400 locations in the country.

The store, near the 395 Freeway off-ramp, will give away prizes including bicycles, a boom boxes, an MP3 player and El Pollo Loco gift certificates on Monday and Tuesday.

It will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Mohammed Sattar, president of Superior Food Services Inc., is the franchise owner.

This is his fourth El Pollo Loco store.
