Hawaii blanks Nevada baseball

The Nevada baseball team got to play in paradise, but ended up on the wrong end of a shutout.

The University of Hawaii took a 4-0 victory over the Wolf Pack Sunday at Les Murakamin Stadium, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

It was the second time this season that Nevada, now 9-7 in the Western Athletic Conference and 22-17 overall, had been shut out.

Hawaii, now 10-10, 19-22, defeated the Wolf Pack three times in the four-game series.

The Wolf Pack managed only three hits by Dayton High School graduate Matt Bowman, first baseman Shaun Kort and pinch hitter Waylen Sing Chow.

Pack third baseman Jason Rodriguez went 0-for-2, snapping his team season- and career-high 14-game hitting streak.

Nevada starter Derek Achelpohl, 1-2, pitched well in the loss giving up four runs on six hits in 6 2Ú3 innings.

UH starter Matt Daly improved to 5-2, striking out seven over going 72Ú3 innings.

Kort ended Daly's no-hit bid with a single to open the seventh inning.

The Rainbow Warriors went up 2-0 in the fifth. Catcher Landon Hernandez scored Kevin Macdonald with a sacrifice fly and left fielder Sean Montplaisir scored third baseman Vinnie Catricala with a groundout to first.

UH added its last two runs in the seventh with two out.

Hawaii shortstop Jonathan Hee's RBI single scored Hernandez and Montplaisir.

Hee led UH, going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.

Nevada returns to action on Friday, when it hosts first-place Fresno State in the first-game of a four-game series beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Peccole Park.
