Vendors sought for Dayton Valley Days

The 20th annual Dayton Valley Days will be Sept. 20-21 and will honor the buildings of yesterday with the theme, "Old Places, New Faces."

The Dayton Station historical railroad depot will be included, along with the other buildings from the community's past.

Money raised goes to the continued restoration of historic Old Town Dayton and aiding organizations that provide Christmas gifts to those in need, provide prevention and intervention, scholarships and provide support to other needs of the community. Call 246-3378 for a booth or other information.

Fire Department golf tournament to benefit kids

The Central Lyon County Fire Protection District will hold its 4th Annual CLCFD Kids to Burn Camp Golf Tournament at 8 a.m. June 7 at Dayton Valley Country Club at Legado.

Proceeds will be used to send kids to Firefighters Kids Camp at Lake Tahoe, and to support the Central Lyon County Burn Fund.

Last year, as result of the generosity of the participants and community businesses, the fire district was able to send four children to camp. Each year many children sustain life threatening injuries or devastating losses as a result of fire. The Firefighters' Kids Camp is a recovery program that provides young burn survivors with a fun and safe camp environment that encourages healing, personal growth and character development.

The CLCF Burn Fund is seeking sponsors, donors and players. Sponsors will be recognized at the tees with a sign bearing the name of the person or company sponsoring the hole. Raffle prizes will be awarded throughout the day. There will also be a chance to win a new car with a hole-in-one.

Enrollment open for ambulance program

Central Lyon County Fire Protection District is offering the Frontier Saver Ambulance Subscription Service to the residents of Central Lyon County. Signing up for the Frontier Saver Program will prevent expensive ambulance fees during a medical emergency. The program covers all non-reimbursed expenses for emergency ground ambulance transportation to area hospitals. Cost of the program is $65 for a household and $50 for a single person.

Fly-in looking for vendors

The 13th Annual Lyon County Fly-In will be held May 17-18 at the Lyon County Regional Airport in Silver Springs with the theme, "Kids in Aviation."

The event includes fly-bys, rocket displays, model planes, private, military, antique planes, and a search and rescue demonstration by NAS Fallon Search & Rescue.

There will also be a pancake breakfast beginning at 7 a.m. both days, until 10 a.m. The breakfast is free for pilots that fly into the airport.

The unique setting allows spectators to view planes up close. Aviation fans are also encouraged to bring their lawn chairs to view the air show on the airport grounds.

The Fly-In is open to the public from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Children between the ages of 8-17 years of age can participate in the "Young Eagles" program. Experience pilots offer free rides of youths as a means to encourage young people to learn more about aviation.

Sustainable workshop at the library

The Silver Stage Library is holding its 4th Annual Sustainable Workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the library, 905 Hwy. 50 West, Silver Springs.

At the workshop participants can learn about organic gardening, alternative energy and local resources. There will be handouts, a slide show and speakers. Participants can snack on refreshments and win a door prize.

Wranglers celebrate Carson River

The Carson River Festival, a family-friendly event, will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 10 at Fort Churchill State Historic Park on Fort Churchill Road in Silver Springs.

Teens from local high schools are planning a variety of activities. Crafts, history programs, nature programs, hiking, birding, face painting and interactive models will be available.

Festival-goers should bring a picnic lunch to enjoy along the banks of the Carson River or at one of the many picnic areas. A concession stand will also be available to purchase food.

Ham radio exams in Stagecoach

Regularly scheduled testing sessions for Amateur Radio Licenses are now available for the first time in Stagecoach. Volunteer examiners will be available every other month on the second Saturday of the even-numbered months.

The next session will be 8 a.m.-noon on June 14 at 8755 Cimarron Trail. Those upgrading an existing license should bring the original license and a photocopy, as well as the originals of any CSCEs.

Chili Cookoff this Saturday

Owners of salivating taste buds will revel in the pleasures of the spicy or the peppery, the savory and zestful treats of the Virginia City Chili on the Comstock festival Saturday.

Award-winning chili cooks will be competing for cash and bragging rights for the best chili and salsa in Virginia City.

Cooking starts at 10:30 am. Salsa will be turned in at noon for judging, green chili at 1 p.m. and red chili at 3 p.m. Come and watch the cooks vie for the best in each category.

First-, second- and third-place prize money of $500, $250 and $100 will be awarded for red chili. Prize money will also be awarded in green chili and salsa.

ICS (International Chili Society)-sanctioned chili contains no beans. Non-ICS chili must contain beans. The winners of this regional cook off will advance to the World Chili Cook-off.

The event is free for the public to attend. People's Choice chili will be available at noon and tickets for tasting will be sold at 50 cents each or 12 for $5. With ticket purchase, you get a tasting kit and a voting ticket.

For each ticket you get a taste of chili. People's Choice will be presented to the cook with the most tickets.

Entry fees are $30 for red chili, $20 for green chili, $10 for salsa, and a $42 membership fee for non-members of ICS,who want to compete in the ICS event.

Cooks set up from 7-10 a.m. Cooks meeting is at 10:30 a.m.

Dinner features Mexican theme

Another in the series of International Dinners prepared by Heather Beaupre of Secret Service Catering will be held 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Edith Palmer's Country Inn, 416 South B St., Virginia City.

This Mexican dinner will feature chicken with mole sauce, chile rellenos with ranchero sauce, roasted vegetables enchilada and apple tamale with vanilla ice cream. Cost is $24, reservations necessary. Call 847-7070.

Children's book authors to hold signing

Mary Jean Kelso and K.C. Snider, the author and illustrator of a story about a special needs child and a wild mustang trained to be a therapy horse, will sign copies of their book at the Mark Twain Bookstore in Virginia City from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

"Andy and the Albino Horse" is being released by Guarding Angel Publishing, Inc., and is the first in a series by Kelso, of Fernley, and Snider of Redmond, Oregon.

B&Bs get together for Mom's Day Event

The Comstock's four bed & breakfasts will offer free guided tours from 1 to 4 p.m. on May 11.

According to Carolyn Eichin, who owns the B Street House Bed and Breakfast, costumed innkeepers will provide information on the history of each establishment.

Light refreshments will be served.

The four participating inns are the B Street House on North B Street, Edith Palmer's Country Inn on South B Street, the Chollar Mansion on South E Street and Seven Mile Canyon Ranch, two miles north of town on SR-341.

Storey ambulance subscription program begins

Open Enrollment for the Storey County Fire Department Ambulance Subscription program is from May 1 to June 30.

The Storey County Fire Department will be offering its annual open enrollment for the Ambulance Subscription Program beginning May 1. It is open to all residents within the department's response area.

Cost is $25 per year per household, and $10 for those older than 55. If you are older the age of 55 the cost is only $10 per year.

MasterWorks Chorale at Piper's

The MasterWorks Chorale will perform "Our American Heritage" chorale music from America at Piper's Opera House at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Chorale is an auditioned chorus of men and women who perform a stunning choral repertoire from the classics to the contemporary. This collection of finely-tuned voices has performed on the stages of Carnegie Hall and the Morman Tabernacle, and at the 50th Presidential Inaugural Parade.

"Our American Heritage" performance will cross the spectrum from American folk songs to '60s memories, from country favorites to patriotic standards.
