Nevada's insurance commissioner to retire

Longtime Nevada Insurance Commissioner Alice Molasky-Arman has announced she will retire in September.

"My decision to leave the division was a difficult one, but I am privileged to have worked with such a highly dedicated and capable staff at the division," Molasky-Arman said. "I am confident that the Division will be left in good hands after my departure."

She was named commissioner in January 1995 by Governor Bob Miller, making her one of the state's longest serving division heads and longest serving insurance commissioner in Nevada history.

"Her work has protected Nevadans and ensured a more stable insurance network in the state," said Gov. Jim Gibbons.

She took a leading role when Nevada's industrial insurance system was converted to a private mutual insurer known as Employers Insurance Company of Nevada and, in 2006, approved the conversion of EIG Mutual, EICON's parent company to a publicly traded stock company to be known as Employers Holdings, Inc.

She also worked to help create the Medical Liability Association of Nevada to provide medical malpractice insurance when major insurers left Nevada in 2002.

And she earned national attention for programs to combat insurance fraud.

"Alice has been a tremendous asset to this state, and we're all very sorry to see her retire," said Mendy Elliott, director of the Nevada Department of Business and Industry.

She said a national search will be launched to find a new insurance commissioner.
