Former manager thanks community after resigning post

After 15 years working part-time as the Carson City Airport manager, Yvon Weaver said she resigned Thursday following a phone call full of innuendo from Carson City Supervisor and Airport Authority member Richard Staub.

But all of that is secondary to her real reason for speaking out, she explained.

Her purpose, said Weaver on Friday, was to thank the community for supporting her for so many years and to let people know she would be OK.

"The response from the citizens of this community has been overwhelming," she said in the midst of preparing for a performance with her band Sierra Express later in the evening. "Basically, I would like to just thank the citizens of Carson City for allowing me the opportunity to manage their airport for the last 15 years.

"Sometimes, in doing the job on day-to-day basis, I forgot to stop and realize that the people in this town were really behind my efforts, and I'm truly touched."

On Thursday, following a two-week vacation, Weaver said she received a phone call from Staub in which Staub said the Airport Authority had decided to seek someone to work as a full-time manager. She said the item was already on the agenda for the Authority meeting that evening.

When Staub told her she should feel free to apply for the position, Weaver said she understood what was happening.

"The writing was on the wall," she said. "I said, 'Mr. Staub, please consider this my resignation,' and he said, 'I'm sorry to hear that,' and I said, 'I don't think you are.'"

"It was disappointing after this length of time, that they were not up front with me."

Staub said Friday that he was not being evasive about what was happening, and that when Weaver resigned, he tried to talk her out of it.

"I think she overreacted to what I was saying," he said. "I think she's a good woman, and she did a great job for the airport."

Though her exit was not ideal, Weaver said she was fine with her decision.

"I want to assure people that this was a good move for me. Sometimes things happen and then you realize, 'You know what? That was a good move for me,'" she said.

"People just know me as the airport manager on a daily basis, but I have so many blessings in life. I think people think, 'Poor Yvon, she's probably sad or upset,' but I'm not.

"I'm still here and still a part of this community, and I appreciated each and every one of the people I met along the way."
