Carson City deputies are keeping a special eye on each of the city's 11 designated school zones.
Penalties for speeding in a school zone are a fine of $142 for speeds 1 to 15 mph over the limit and $187 for speeds 16 mph or more over the speed limit.
In certain zones, such as Fremont Elementary between Little Lane and Cardinal Way, the 15 mph speed limit is only enforced when the amber lights of the signs are flashing. Yet, in the school zones surrounding Carson Middle School and Bordewich Bray, some signs read "15 mph between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m." Other signs read "15 mph 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. and 2:15 to 3:30 p.m."
When it comes to school buses in particular, state statute lays a heavy fine on motorists who violate the law.
When meeting or overtaking, from either direction, a school bus picking up or dropping off students, drivers must immediately stop and not attempt to pass the bus until the flashing light ceases.
If a motorists violates the provision, a first-offense fine is between $250 and $500. Second-offense is the same fine but additionally the motorist's license is suspended. A third, or subsequent offense within two years is a fine of not more than $1,000 and suspension of one's driver's license not to exceed a year.
