School is back in session, so watch out for all the kids, since they usually don't watch out for you. Labor Day festivities cover this whole weekend ... train rides at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, the conventions (no, of course we haven't had enough politics this year, last year, the year before ...) picnics and the Rib Cook-Off in Sparks.

Now that the Olympics are over, Ken Fraser sent us some "quotes" he found on the Internet from NBC sports commentators (the best we can't print): Boxing analyst " "Sure there have been injuries, and even some deaths in boxing, but none of them were really that serious." Softball " "If history repeats itself, I should think we can expect the same thing again." Basketball " "He dribbles a lot and the opposition doesn't like it. In fact you can see it all over their faces." Only one and a half years 'til the Winter Olympics. And since the Mayan calendar says the world will end in August of 2012, we probably don't have to worry about making the next summer team.

The WNC/Greater Nevada Credit Union Golf Classic (breathe here) will hold its 11th annual tournament on Friday, Sept. 19, at Eagle Valley West, beginning at 9 a.m. This benefits scholarships, rural outreach and athletics. Don't miss this opportunity to have a good time. Call 445-3240 for information and reservations. Fore!

Wally Bennett, who's been here 50 years, told Carolyn that it was Hot Springs Road, not Airport, that was resurfaced (it's mostly done now, by the way). They "blend together" somewhere up north of town, and he says some days even he's confused (probably not ... he's just being polite). And speaking of 50 years, congratulations to Mary and Jack Davis on 50 years of marriage (you know him as the "star man"... Jack C. Davis Observatory, open Saturdays to the public at 7 p.m.; and Mary is the noted Basque cook book author ... yum).

Our sympathies go out to the families of Bill Goni, Dennis Phelps and Marcella Hight, who all passed away recently. They will be missed. On a happier note: Happy Birthday's to Deacon Bob Evans, Romeo Rosaschi (who's turned a spritely 85), and Ben Grissom (who's "almost" that old). We were also sorry to see that Chief Deputy Steve Schuette had to retire to get his medical benefits. He, and others, are being forced out by a ditso law. Whatever happens, we hope he and Lisa have a great time.

Bill Saurer sent us this one he found: "Rick was in trouble and forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really angry and told him, 'Tomorrow, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from zero to 200 in less than 10 seconds. AND IT BETTER BE THERE.' The next morning, Rick left for work, and, when his wife woke up, she looked out the window. Sure enough, there was a small gift in the middle of the driveway. Confused, the wife went out, opened it, and found a new bathroom scale. Rick has been missing since Friday. Please pray for him."

If you've been reading the paper, you know that the UNR Marching Band is facing the chopping block. Mayor Bob Cashell of Reno is spearheading a drive to raise $250,000 to keep the band a reality. If you are an alumni or a friend of the university, please give him a hand by donating to UNR Foundation, Mail Stop 152, Reno, NV 89557, and mark "Marching Band" on your check. Many thanks.

Cindy Watty wants to contact anyone interested in touring the wine regions of Beaujolais, Bourdeaux and Champagne in France, and dine at gourmet restaurants. If you are interested in a lovely trip to that area this coming May, please call her at 246-7850. She has all the details, and we know it would be "tres magnifique!"

Carolyn and Maizie will be watching the Democratic Convention with great interest, since M met both Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden (who has a granddaughter named "Maisie." Neat.) And, FYI, ZBistro is now open for dinners at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday nights, as well as Fridays and Saturdays.

Sherry Hester sent us some Internet "walking" information: "Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional five months in a nursing home at $7,000 a month." "I like long walks, especially when taken by people who annoy me." "My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60. Now he's 97 and we don't know where the heck he is." And, "The only reason I would take up walking, is so I could hear heavy breathing again." Here's to your health, too.
