130 years ago


A few days since several gentlemen desirous of ascertaining the date of the beginning of the fiscal year of this State, found Governor Bradley sitting on the portico of the Capitol building. They approached and put the question to him. He replied, "Wall, my sons, I can't 'zactly say, but believe its 'bout the fifteenth o' July."


110 years ago


To be Mustered Out. Yesterday morning Governor Sadler received a telegram from Washington authorizing the mustering out of all troops as soon as convenient and return equipment to the keeping of the State. It will be some time yet before the red tape can be unwound. There was great hilarity in camp when the news came as camp life is regarded as quite monotonous.


70 years ago


Several pounds of special mail will be taken from a special mailbox in front of the post office for the pony express race from Carson to Sacramento. Postmaster E.H. Bath says that mail has been received by air from points across the U.S. for the special delivery by horse.


50 years ago


Eugene "Debs" Longero, 52, died suddenly at his home this morning. He was born Dec. 23, 1908 and moved to Battle Mountain as a child. He was active in mining most of his life, serving as a scout for the Getchell-Wingfield interests. Longero was one of the contributors who helped build the mining exhibit at the Nevada State Museum.


20 years ago


A legislative plan to ban 16 year olds from driving if they don't attend school was nixed by a panel this week. The proposal was nixed because most felt driving is a rite of passage into adulthood.

A report issued by the Nevada Highway Patrol says that sobriety checkpoints are a cost-effective way to help catch alcohol-impaired drivers and reduce accidents.
