The Carson High boys basketball team got off to a strong start and never looked back in a 47-32 win over Escalante, Calif., on Friday in the Rotary Classic at South Tahoe High School.
Carson (2-1) took a 21-9 lead after one quarter and was never threatened after that. "We got off to a pretty good start," CHS coach Bruce Barnes said. "We were pretty much in control the whole time."
The Senators were able to force Escalante into numerous turnovers.
"On the defensive end is where we played pretty well," Barnes said.
Barnes said the game also gave him a chance to give "some guys minutes that they needed."
Brian Barnes scored 18 points, Uriel Duran and Ian Gunn each added seven points and Kalvin Case added five points for Carson. Barnes said his post players continued their solid play.
"Our big guys did a great job rebounding the ball," Barnes said.
Barnes said among his post players who have been strong on the boards so far this season has been Pat Smith.
"He's been pretty consistent," Barnes said.
Carson will receive a tough test today when it concludes play in the tournament at 12:30 p.m. against Soquel, Calif. Soquel hit 10 3-pointers in the first half alone against Escalante earlier in the tournament.
Barnes said Soquel's style of play is similar to that of Paul Westhead's Loyola Marymount teams in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
"They shoot the ball extremely well," Barnes said. "The faster the tempo, the better for them."
BOYS BASKETBALL
CARSON JV 70, REED 38
Timmy Miranda scored a team-high nine points for the Senators, who improved to 2-0 on the season. Tyler Collins and Danny Gall each added eight points for Carson.

The Senators jumped out to a 22-2 first quarter lead and never looked back.
Ty Keffer and Austin Pacheco each scored 12 points and Max Keller added 11 for the Senators, who held a 37-4 halftime lead over the Wolverines at the Wooster Tournament.
Carson, which faces North Valleys today at 11 a.m., improved to 4-0.

The Lions split a pair of games in the Mineral County Tournament to move to 3-1 on the season.
Tyler Crowl scored 23 points, Michael Veil added 16 and Vinnie Arrigi pumped in 14 for the Lions in their game against the Lakers.
Burke Bristol led the Lions with 13 points in a loss to Alamo.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
REED 55, GALENA 37
Sophomore forward Emily Burns led the Grizzlies with 18 points in a loss to the Raiders at Galena High School.
Erica Mackenzie scored a team-high 14 points for defending High Desert League champion Reed, which held a 12-6 lead after one quarter and a 31-24 lead at the half.
"We hung around early, but we couldn't get a run," said Galena head coach Karen Friel, whose Grizzlies committed 22 turnovers. "(The Raiders) do a frontcourt trap that takes you out of your rhythm. They're pretty big, they rebound " we couldn't get a lot of second shots."
The Grizzlies are also saddled with youth and at one point Friel said she had four sophomores and a freshman on the floor.
Galena has four seniors, only one of which starts.
"I didn't know what to expect," Friel said. "It was the girls' first varsity experience. I was hoping we wouldn't get blown out today. We didn't."
It was the season-opener for both teams.
