The Carson High boys basketball team picked up an impressive 59-57 win over Soquel, Calif., on Saturday at the Rotary Classic at South Tahoe High School.
Soquel was on of the more talented teams in the tournament and a high-powered scoring team that was routinely scoring more than 80 points, but the Senators were able to hold Soquel to 57 points. Making the win more impressive was the fact that Carson played without starting point guard Matt Rutledge, who was taking his SATs.
Carson (3-1) went to a committee to replace Rutledge with Steven Fowzer starting the game and doing a solid job as he played the majority of the time at point. Others who played at point included Brian Barnes.
"They live and die at the three-point line," said Carson coach Bruce Barnes about Soquel, who was still able to hit nine 3-pointers. "They're a perimeter-oriented team that likes to spread you out, penetrate and kick."
Carson trailed 13-12 after one quarter, but led 32-28 at halftime and 50-42 after three quarters. Carson still led by eight points when Soquel was able to take advantage of Senator mistakes on back-to-back possessions. After the Senators missed a breakaway layup in transition, Soquel came down and hit a three.
The Senators then missed a front end of a one-and-one and Soquel went down to hit another three to close to within two, but Carson was able to hold on.
"We need to execute a little bit better with a lead," coach Barnes said. "It's good that we got the win."
Brian Barnes scored 17 points, Paul Cagle and Uriel Duran each had 11 points, Pat Smith had 10 points and Kalvin Case added seven points for Carson. The Senators will be tested in their next game as they will host Northern 4A power Reed at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Morse Burley Gym.
GALENA FALLS
The young Grizzlies showed the growing pains they will go through this season as they lost to Drake, of Marin, Calif., 58-40 on Saturday at Galena High School.
Drake jumped out to an 18-5 lead after one quarter and never looked back. "They're very physical, very strong, very fundamental team," Galena coach Tom Maurer said.
Galena committed 26 turnovers.
"We got careless with the ball," Maurer said. "We're very inexperienced. I think our understanding game by game is going to be better. I've got a very good group of kinds."
Ryan Dougherty, Alex Hansen and Luke Sylke all scored six points for Galena (1-1).
CHS JVS SPLIT
Carson (3-1) lost 59-53 in overtime to Reno and beat Fallon 50-33 on Saturday. Against Reno, Danny Gall scored 14 points and Logan Philippi added 10 points. Against Fallon, Tim Miranda scored 10 points and Tyler Collins added eight points.
CARSON FROSH STAYS UNBEATEN
The Senators took a 43-32 win over North Valleys and followed it with a 59-34 victory over Wooster to claim the Wooster Frosh Classic at Wooster High School on Saturday.
After center Ty Keffer scored a game-high 11 points against the Panthers, he scored a team-high 19 against the Colts and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Carson guard Clint Page was named All-Tournament and scored nine points against North Valleys.
Max Keller scored 15 in the win against Wooster as Carson improved to 6-0 on the season.
Carson's Drew Moreland won the free-throw competition.
YERINGTON BOYS SPLIT
The Lions dropped their first game 65-57 against Lovelock before rebounding with a 72-66 victory over Hawthorne at the Hawthorne Classic. Tyler Crowl led the Lions with 21 points against Lovelock and Burke Bristol added 28 against Hawthorne.
Yerington is now 4-2.
