Jeff Brooks of Carson City and Julie Merrill of Gardnerville have completed the insurance agent career accelerator course at the University of Farmers. Farmers Group, Inc. is a subsidiary of Zurich Financial Services, an insurance-based financial services provider with a global network of subsidiaries and offices in North America and Europe as well as in Asia Pacific, Latin America and other markets.

Charley's Grilled Subs in the Carson Mall will have it's grand opening at 5:15 p.m. Dec. 23. The restaurant chain is based in Columbus, Ohio.

Local companies seeking recognition among the best employers in the region are invited to participate in the second annual "Greater Reno-Tahoe Best Places to Work" Awards. Nominations for the "Best Places to Work" Awards are open until January 30, 2009.


Employees are encouraged to nominate an employer as a "Best Place to Work" if they feel their employer has created a positive work environment for them and their colleagues. The Bureau of Land Management sold 96 parcels containing 207,731 acres during its quarterly oil and gas competitive lease sale in Reno on Dec. 9, which brought in $741,220. Of that total sale receipt amount, $416,154 is bonus bid revenue, which is split between the state and the U.S. Treasury.
