The spirit of giving is alive at Carson High School.

Last week was known as the "Week of Giving Back," a chance for students and teachers to help others in need.

The events of the week were organized by Student Leadership, who collected donations of food, clothing and money. In addition, students were invited to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless.

National Honor Society members continued the coat drive that began a few weeks earlier. A "Miracle Minute" was held during the announcements on behalf of the Naval Junior ROTC program, in which students were asked to donate money for clothing to be sent to needy families in Iraq.

In addition to the call to help others, the Week of Giving Back allowed students to show their school spirit with a different theme each day, including "Rock Star Day," " Kindergarten Day," and "Pirate vs. Super Hero Day."

Students demonstrated tremendous creativity with their costumes. Fun-filled events held during the week included music in Senator Square during lunch, a video game tournament and a showing of "A Christmas Story" at the Warehouse.

The week culminated with the Winter Ball, held on Saturday night.  Twenty Five cents from every admission ticket was set aside for the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

The Week of Giving Back provided a good balance for students as they prepared for their exams and it and raised their awareness of the needs of many families this holiday season.

Students will have one more opportunity to give this week. They are invited to contribute to a canned food drive in the CHS Library. Those students who owe overdue fines can have them cleared by bringing one non-perishable food item for each fine.

All donations will be given to FISH.
