High school aids community

Many people in our community are set back by certain circumstances and can't afford to celebrate the joyous season ahead of us. The battle against these circumstances will not be successful without charitable contributions given by people who can afford it.

As the holiday season approaches, Carson High students take ownership in spreading and sharing the gift of generosity for causes in our world.

Hosted by Carson High School's Leadership program, the Week of Giving will be held this week and is designed to unify all of the students in donating to a charitable cause for the holiday season.

Each class has selected a charity, and on their designated day of the week, they will collect specific donations. To spread awareness of the charities, the classes also have assigned dress-up days.

On Monday, the freshmen class contributed to the Advocates to End Domestic Violence. They placed donation bins throughout the school to collect shampoo, soap bars and other toiletries. To spread awareness of this cause, the students wore purple.

Tuesday, the sophomore class asked classmates to donate to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.

The junior class is collecting clothes to donate to Friends in Service Helping (FISH) today. There will be donation boxes throughout the school, and the class is asking for clothes that are washed and are in good condition to be given to charity.

As the weather is now beginning to get cold, the junior class encourages students to wear scarves for their dress-up day.

The senior class is having a "Souper Thursday" to contribute to the Ronald McDonald House in Reno. The senior class will be collecting soup cans in donation boxes placed throughout the school.

As a dress-up day, the senior class encourages everyone to wear favorite tacky Christmas sweaters.

On Friday, the student body officers have partnered with the Invisible Children organization in contributing to the Schools for Schools campaign.

To raise funds for this campaign, the Invisible Children organization will be walking around with "Change for Change" buckets, in order to collect money to help rebuild Keyo Secondary School in Uganda.

Also, they will be selling red ribbons to show support for this organization. During lunch, the heads of the organization, Scott Galloway, Caitlin Sinclair, Andrew Jones, and Brian Barnes will present a short presentation on what Invisible Children is and the current situation in Uganda.

To increase awareness of this cause, the student body officers are encouraging students to wear white shirts and sandals.
