One man was killed and a woman critically injured Monday morning after the vehicle they were in rolled on Interstate 80 near Mustang and ended up in the path of a semi truck driven by a Carson City man.
According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, Darlene Douthit, 38, of Reno, was westbound in a 1991 Isuzu Trooper just after 5 a.m. when she lost control, barreled through the center dirt median, and rolled over in the eastbound lane directly in the path of an 18-wheeled commercial vehicle.
The driver of the semi, Lewis R. Tuttle, 55, of Carson City, was not able to avoid striking the Isuzu, the release states.
A 53-year-old male passenger in the Isuzu was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Douthit was taken by helicopter to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno with critical injuries, said Trooper Chuck Allen.
Tuttle was not injured.
Allen said the accident appeared to have been a result of "speed too fast for conditions primarily related to the falling and freezing snow."
Both eastbound lanes and one westbound lane of the freeway was closed for just over two hours while troopers investigated.
