Carson girls split in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS " Carson High's girls basketball team split two games at the Las Vegas Invitational on Monday.

Green Valley of Henderson knocked off Carson 61-46 in the morning game, but the Senators bounced back with a 64-45 win over South Anchorage of Alaska last night.

Carson is 7-5 entering today's game against Coronado of Las Vegas.

In the win over South Anchorage, Carson trailed 17-10 after one quarter, but an 18-9 surge in the second quarter gave it a 28-26 lead at the half. Carson led by six, 40-34, after three quarters and then put away the game with a 24-point third quarter.

"We picked up our defensive intensity in the second quarter," said CHS coach Todd Ackerman. "We made them turn it over. I think they got a little tired in the fourth quarter and we got some easy baskets."

Elayna Shine led Carson with a season-high 18 points.

Gina Bianchi followed with 12 and Tiffany O'Day added nine with Cassie Vondrak scoring eight.

In the loss to Green Valley, Carson trailed 19-5 after the first quarter and 37-21 at the half. Carson never got closer than nine.

"We didn't handle their pressure well early," Ackerman said.

Bianchi led Carson with 14 and Whitney Nash added 10.

Carson is playing without Brandi Vega, who is in Florida playing in a soccer tournament.

DAYTON 60, HAWTHORNE 55

BISHOP " Dayton showed the effects of a Christmas break, but still managed to outlast Hawthorne at the Bishop Tournament.

Dayton, 5-4, plays Bishop today at 1 and then returns to action at 5:30 against Hesperia.

"We looked like we'd had time off," coach T.W. Cunningham said. "We gave up some easy baskets and didn't shoot the ball well. We were 10-for-28 from the line, so we left some points out there."

Kage Walker led Dayton with 18 points and Tannar Wood added 11. Dakota Lee and Chris Sikora added nine apiece.

CARSON JV BOYS 64, MANOGUE 57

RENO " Chris Steele scored 15 and Danny Gall added 13 to lead Carson's JV boys to a win over Bishop Manogue in the semifinals of the State Farm Classic at North Valleys High School.

Carson, 8-1, plays Douglas for the title today.

CARSON JV GIRLS 43, TRUCKEE 16

Carson led by 10 at the half and extended that lead in the second half en route to an easy win.

Carson, 9-3, plays the Douglas-McQueen winner for the consolation title tonight at 5:45 at Damonte Ranch. On Saturday, Carson beat Fallon 40-10.

Eliza Matley led Carson with eight points, while Tiana McAllister added six points and six rebounds and Natalie Morrow scored five points and pulled down seven rebounds.

CARSON FROSH BOYS 52, MANOGUE 45

Ty Keefer scored 17, Max Keller 14 and Austin Pacheco 13 to lead Carson into the State Farm finals against Douglas.

Carson improved to 10-1.

CARSON FROSH GIRLS 49, NORTH VALLEYS 32

Carson improved to 13-0 with an easy win over the Panthers, who advanced because of a forfeit.

Allison Vondrak pulled down 10 rebounds for Carson and Kaitlyn Holmes had six.
