George Joseph Pitta

George Joseph Pitta passed away Saturday morning, February 2, 2008 in Reno. He was 87.

George was born December 26, 1920 in Oakland, Calif. to parents Augusto and Maria Pitta who immigrated to the United States in 1911 from Madera Island, Portugal. He proudly served our country in WWII in the United States Navy, during which time he assisted in the recovery efforts after Pearl Harbor attack. He continued his service in the Naval Reserved for 8 years. He married Barbara Toole on Veterans Day, November 11, 1944 and resided in Carson City since 1960 before relocating to Sparks in 2002 after the passing of his wife of 57 years.

He was a cabinetmaker by trade throughout his life with a passion and pride few will ever see or enjoy. Before retirement in 1984, he was a Building Inspector with the State of Nevada, Public Works Board, and oversaw the reconstruction of the State Capital in Carson City. He received commendation for his vital role in this project on March 28, 1980 by Governor Robert List. His devotion to family and commitment to his values are true and admired. Simply said by his grandson Jason "he never spoke a word that he did not lead by example."

He is preceded in death by his wife Barbara and grand-daughter-in-law, Kristen Kunze both in 2001. His daughter Sandra Kunze passed in 1985.

He is survived by his daughter, Leona Pierce; grandchildren, Jason Clack, Tanya Kunze, Jeff Kunze, Alana Davis and six great grandchildren all of Sparks; a sister, Ida Ritterman of Maryland.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be held at Truckee-Tahoe Mortuary, 10126 Church Street, Truckee, CA on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 11 a.m. Flowers may be sent to the Mortuary or donations may be sent in memory of George to Vista Care Hospice at 1625 E. Prater Way, #108, Sparks NV 89434
