Fernley knocks off Dayton to create logjam in Northern 3A boys race

Jacob Lehman drained a 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds as Fernley High created a logjam in the Northern 3A boys basketball race with a 48-46 victory at Dayton on Friday night.

The loss was a tough one for Dayton, which came into the contest in sole possession of first place in the league. The Dust Devils are now 9-4 in league (16-8 overall) and locked in a three-way tie for first place with Incline (54-52 winner over Lowry) and Sparks (66-56 winner over Yerington).

Fernley improved to 3-10 in league, 7-18 overall.

Ryan Ransdell led all scorers with 17 points for Dayton. Jordan Harry scored 12 and Lehman 10 for Fernley.

Dayton concludes its regular season today with a 2 p.m. home game against Sparks.

Reno 75, Douglas 39

Reno led start to finish as the Huskies capped off a perfect 14-0 Sierra League season with a win against the second-place Tigers.

Austin Morgan scored 17 points, including four 3-pointers, and Olek Czyz added 14 for the Huskies (21-6 overall), who led 17-8 after one quarter.

"They came to compete. They stepped out and played great from the start," Douglas coach Corey Thacker said.

Douglas (19-9, 11-3) was led by James McLaughlin with 11 points and Jeff Nady with 10.

GIRLS

Dayton 62, Fernley 35

Chanelle Thompson scored 28 points to help Dayton (10-3, 18-3) remain tied for first place with Yerington in the Northern 3A.

Kathy Arias also scored nine points, Aundria Pluck six, Ariella Ruybal five, Erika Garcia four, Matia Spencer three and Nicole Iracabal two for the Dust Devils.

Brianna Dunn led Fernley with 10 points.

Yerington 55, Sparks 49

Kayla Lommori and Karrie-Ann Quartz ignited a 24-8 third-quarter run that helped Yerington (26-4, 10-3) maintain its share of first-place.

Lommori scored 12 points in the third quarter, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Quarter added eight as the Lions turned a 21-20 halftime deficit into a 44-29 lead. Quartz finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds, while Lommori had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Sierra Shaw led Sparks with 19 points and Dakota Shaw scored 15.

Reno 44, Douglas 34

Reno used a big second quarter to take charge in a showdown for first place in the Sierra League. The win capped a 14-0 league season for the Huskies, while Douglas finished 12-2 (22-7 overall)

"They had a big second quarter run on us and you can't let a team like that do that," Douglas coach Werner Christen said. "We fought back in the second half, the kids never quit, we just came up a little short against a heckuva team."

Douglas was led by Jessica Waggoner with 14 points. Bridget Maestretti also had seven points and Taryn Williams six for the Tigers.

Boys

Carson frosh 76, Wooster 49

Timmy Miranda scored 13 points to lead a balanced attack that helped Carson wrap up a perfect league season (13-0). The team finished 21-1 overall, the lone loss coming against Douglas during a pre-season tournament.

Six different players scored seven points or better. In addition to Miranda, Trey Jensen scored 11 points, Chris Steele 10, Danny Gall nine, Jon Parker eight and Logan Philippi seven. Tyler Collins and Matt Cooper scored four each, Eric Garcia and Andrew Jones each scored three, while Johnny Lanuza, Tim Dotson and Carlos Carrillo had two apiece.

Wooster JV 58, Carson 57

Michael Lowes and Jeff Davies scored 14 and 13 points respectively to lead Carson in a closely contested season finale.

Brennan Shaffer and Ean Witter scored nine points each and Pat Smith eight, while Kevin Kurek and Josh Peacock contributed two each for Carson (16-7, 7-7).

Carson JV girls 58, Wooster 34

Carson stats: Anderson 1 point, Butler 4 points, Krupp 7 points, 7 steals, McFarren 2 points, 2 steals, Tiffer 2 points, 3 steals, Shaw 7 points, 3 rebounds, Schulz 7 points, 3 steals, Stevens 9 points, 3 assists, Dudley1 point, 5 rebounds, Nash 9 points, 5 rebounds, Virden 9 points,10 rebounds.

Carson record: 16-6 overall,10 -4 Sierra League.
