Muriel M. Gamble passed away Feb. 7, 2008 at Carson City, Nevada.
Mrs. Gamble was born in Lovelock, Nevada on September 6, 1923. Her parents were Maren and Hans Westergard, Lower Valley Ranchers.
Elementary school years were spent at the Big Meadow School in Lower Valley. She graduated from Pershing County High School in 1940 following which she attended the University of Nevada and was graduated with the class of 1944 with majors in Business Education and Political Science.
Muriel's professional life was spent teaching in several Nevada high schools including Elko County High School at Wells, Nevada; Sparks High School, in Washoe County and in the Carson City School District. During her tenure in Carson City High School, she taught business subjects and served as Department Chairman of the Business Education Department for several years. She was honored as "Teacher of The Year", Carson City School District, 1982. Following retirement in 1983, she was elected to and served for two terms as a member of the Carson District School Board; during this period, she served eight years as the board representative on the Carson City Recreation Commission along with her responsibilities as a elected school board member.
Mrs. Gamble was active in several community organizations including the Carson City Retired Teachers' Association; Delta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma (past president) an educational society for women; Chapter AJ of P.E.O. a philanthropic educational society. She was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church: Redeemer Lutheran, Lovelock, Nevada, and Bethlehem Lutheran of Carson City. In 1946, she was married to John Gamble, a long time Nevada educator.
She is survived by John, Sr., and their three sons: John R. Gamble, Jr.; David R. Gamble, (Diane) and Douglas R. Gamble, (Laura). She, in addition, is survived by seven grandchildren: Cory and Tawnya Gamble of Reno; Allison and Michelle Gamble of Reno, as well as Jesse, Luke and Ellie Gamble of San Jose, Costa Rica. She is also survived by a sister, Audrey Munk, of Lovelock and a brother, Roland Westergard of Carson City. A number of nephews and nieces also survive her.
Preceding her death are brothers Ralph and George Westergard and sisters, Lilly Stone and Christenca Moore.
A visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008 5 to 7 p.m. at Walton's In Carson City. A Christian service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1837 Mountain St. Carson City at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran School, 1837 N. Mountain St. Carson City, Nevada; to Pershing Co. High School Alumni Scholarship Fund, Lovelock, Nevada. 89419; or The American Heart Association, box 78851, Phoenix, Arizona.
Walton's Chapel of the Valley has been entrusted with her final arrangements.
